Events Calendar September 2001 - Pre-All Ireland Lunch October 2001 - Proposed date for annual competition
About the Section The 15-a-side Gaelic Football Trophy presented by New Ireland was first competed for in 1953 and won by New Ireland. Over 150 players participate in the competition each year and this year it is hoped to increase the number to 250.
It is also hoped to commence a ladies competition and any assistance or ideas are very welcome. Please contact any Committee Member.
In 1989 the Gaelic section travelled to the U.S.A. Three games were played, one in New York against Cavan and two in Boston against New England League selection. The travelling party won all three games.
Over the last 20 years or more the Section has been run by Ollie Fahy, Maxie McMenamin and Gerry Killeen, and the new Committee would like to thank them for their dedication and hard work over those years. Colm Burke and John Killeen were also involved in the latter years. This year the intention is to run the competition over the first three weeks in September with up to 12 teams taking part.
An inaugural pre All Ireland lunch in the hallowed surroundings of Croke Park is also planned for 2001. More about this in the next update.
It is also intended to resurrect the annual London trip in 2002.
