About the Section

The Soccer Section of the DIAS is one of the largest sections, catering for in excess of 1,000 people each year who participate in our 11 and 5 a side competitions.  These events are run during the summer months for both males and female players and always generate a huge amount of interest (and headaches for the organising committees).

The Gents 11 a side competition has been in existence since 1914 and the Ladies competition was introduced in 1976.  Both are run on a knock out basis.

A Gents 5-a-side competition was introduced in 1976 and the Ladies 5-a-side competition followed a year later.

In 1997 an Over 35's Gents competition was introduced and who knows the ladies might follow in the lads footsteps.!!

There has also been a long tradition of representative games against our colleagues in Belfast, Cork and Limerick and also the odd adventure to the UK.  Unfortunately due to circumstances beyond our control the only remaining permanent fixture is that against Belfast.  This probably reflects the difficult times being experienced by the industry as a whole.

In 1994 the Soccer Section travelled to the USA.  This was in conjunction with the Irish Team who qualified for the World Cup.  Three matches were played in the US and the travelling party went to see Ireland play all their group games.  The highlight of these, being our 1-0 victory over Italy in the Giant's Stadium.
