April 11th. Public Meeting

(The First Year of Skerries Parish Bulletin)

On Tuesday 11th. April, Patricia Flavin showed the history which can be resurrected by a consideration of a year in the life of the parish bulletin. She chose the first year 1978 and expanded on the items mentioned in the bulletin through her research in newspapers, internet, and by getting photographs and information from Skerries residents.

In November 1978 the first weekly bulletin was launched by Fr. Diarmuid Connolly. His aims were to develop the liturgy and to bring the parish community together with news of events in religion, education, charities and sport. The first chapter of the bulletin would be a reflection on the Gospel or other readings from the Sunday Mass.

People were made more aware of happenings in the parish - sharing the news of Baptisms, Marriages and Deaths. Included also were the Church of Ireland and Methodist Church Congregations.

The Bulletin was amazingly successful in its first year and has continued without a break every week up to the present day. It is a great source for history going back 27 years.

Geraldine McQuillan has helped in publishing the bulletin from the beginning and described some of the thrills and spills of the early days when the equipment was far less sophisticated than now. Thanks to her meticulous caretaking, Skerries Historical Society has a copy of every single one produced. SHS has carefully bound and preserved them for future generations of locals and historians.

Brian O'Byrne thanked Patricia Flavin on behalf of Skerries Historical Society.
