On Tuesday 10th. January a paper entitled "John McGowan, 1900-1922, Irish Volunteer and Civil War Casualty" was given by Frank Whearity. This was the 4th paper given by Frank on the history of Skerries men, who died in the period 1916 - 1922.
John McGowan was born and grew up in Cross St. on the site of the Gladstone Inn. The McGowan family was related to the Derham and Glennon families. John, also known as Jack McGowan joied the Irish Volunteers. He took part in the battle of Ashbourne and in two other actions - at the R.I.C. station in Rush and at Gormanstown Military Camp. He evaded arrest and went to live in Dublin.

At the beginning of the Civil War he was shot and wounded in a skirmish between the "Irregulars" and "Free Staters" on the 28th June 1922 near St. Stephen's Green. He died on July 1st. 1922 as a result of his injuries. He is buried in Holmpatrick cemetery.
