Our Society had a most interesting paper entitled "From Protection to Free Trade - The Rush Seafaring Community, 1820 - 1914" given by david Snook on Tuesday 14th. February.
The two main shipping companies involved were Palgrave Murphy and the Bristol Steam Navigation Company. In 1903 sailing ships were replaced by steam. The shipping routes were (1) Hamburg - Swansea - Bristol - Hamburg and (2) Hamburg - Dublin - Belfast - Swansea - Hamburg
Around 50 Rush seamaen worked for Palgrave Murphy as masters, mates and seamen; e.g. there was Thomas Hoare and later his son and Thomas Cosgrove. Also James Nourse of the Nourse Shipping Line.

After the 1914-18 War the shipping went to India and South America. In 1917 the line went from Calcutta to Demerara (British Guiana). Two of the ships were the Main (a river in Northern Ireland) and the Mutlah (a river in India).
There is a record of Thomas Cosgrave of Rush on the S.S. Hughli? In all there were about 300 Rush born men in the seafaring trade.
A vote of thanks was given by Stephanie Bourke on behalf of the Society.
