The Irish Language in Fingal.

(Skerries Historical Society's Lecture - Nov. 2004)

Skerries Historical Society members and friends were treated to a fascinating talk on "The Irish Language in Fingal" by Antain Mac Lochlainn at our monthly meeting on Tuesday 9th. November.

According to tradition Irish survived in Fingal well into the 19th. century, in places such as the Naul area, Stamullen and Julianstown. .

The islands of Skerries were known in ancient times as Inse Maccu Chor - Islands of the Sons of Cor. We know them as Colt Island, St. Patrick's and Shenick Island (derived from Sionnach = fox). A fourth called Rubha Oileán was probably Red Island.

Rockabill was Carraig Dá Bhiolla - probably named after Balor. Some rocks off the coast of Achill are also known as Na Biollaí, probably of the same origin

There is a folk tale which explains the origin of the two rocks of Rockabill. (See detailed notes by Antain Mac Lochlainn)
Also in the tales of the Fianna, Fionn Mac Cumhaill and the Fianna were once held captive on Rockabill.

This was a very enjoyable and informative lecture with good audience participation afterwards. A vote of thanks to Antain Mac Lochlainn was proposed by John Harte on behalf of those present and Skerries Historical Society.
