Joseph Derham was born in Skerries in 1886. His mother died whwn he was two years old and his older sister, Catherine, reared Joe and his brother Matthias. As a young man living in Dublin he joined the Irish Volunteers and fought in the G.P.O. in 1916. He was a friend of Michael Collins and was a man of many high principles, who felt it was his duty to fight for Irish Freedom. After the Rebellion he was imprisoned in Wandsworth Jail.

He lost his job in the British Civil Service as a result of his revolutionary activities and after his release from prison became a sales representative for pharmaceutical and hairdressing products.
In 1918 he married Annie Fitzmaurice. The lived in Iona Drive, Glasnevin, where they raised a large family of eleven children. Joe regained a position in the Irish Free Stae Civil Service, Office of Public Works, where he worked until his retirement. He died in 1966.
