Aussie Hughes gave us a beautifully crafted talk entitled A Mariner's Tale. We got a great insight into life in Irish Shipping in the 1940s & 1950s. Aussie described one particular voyage, which lasted 11 months, 12 days on the Irish Elm in 1958.
The crew visited all sorts of exotic ports of call, over 20 in all - such as New Orleans, Panama, Hawaii, Kobe(Japan), Borneo, Calcutta, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Montreal, and back to Dublin. He told weird and wonderful stories - it must have been a colourful voyage!

David O'Connor gave us a sample from his huge repertoire of recitations and ballads, such as the Lay of Loughshinney, and Piddlin Pete (an incontinent cur from an antipodean continent). Thanks to Gerry Burke for his song the Coast of Malabar and M.C. for the night, Roderick Neary, replete with jokes and stories.
Skerries Historical Society members and friends had a very enjoyable evening, including the now customary festive refreshments.
