Our talk for April was given by S.H.S. member, Patricia Flavin. The paper entitled "A Skerries Street in Victorian Times" was thoroughly researched. We learned about the houses and their inhabitants in Church St., about boatowners and fishermen who were also farmers, grocers or masons. Women used to sit outside their front doors working on needlework and lacemaking. The 1840s were hard times with famine and fever e.g. 114 cases of cholera and 45 deaths.

The original National School and Catholic Church were in Chapel St. - now Church St. The new church was built in 1939. Shops included Eliz. Byrne's Pub - now the Black Raven. There was White's Medical Hall (1898) and Meally's Fancy Depot for tourists (1901). On May 1st. each year there was dancing around the may bush. Boys and girls also played with spinning tops.
Patricia's talk allowed us a nostalgic glance back to the "good old days".
