A bearded man appeared in the District court today charged with the manslaughter of a man found bound and gagged in a house in Sandymount. Liam Jameson (35) with an address in London, was charged in connection with the killing of John Les (65) of Vavosour Sq off Bath Avenue, Sandymount.
In reply to the charge, Jameson said: "I regret it ever happened and it will never leave my conscience."
Jameson was also charged with the larceny of jewellery from the address at which Mr Lees was found dead.
A third charged laid against Jameson accuses him of the unlawful taking of Mr Lees' car. After caution, the defendant told gardai: "I did do it". Judge Terrace Finn remanded Jameson to December 17.

Hunt for Gay Sex Killer

(Taken from front page of 'The Evening Herald' Dec 9th 1998)
Detectives today mounted a major murder hunt after a horror killing in Dublin. Gardai beleive a man (65) found dead in Sandymount, was the unwitting victim of a serial sex offender.
The innocent victim is believed to have been assaulted and then murdered by the man with convictions in Britain for sex crimes. Today a massive hunt was underway in the city and detectives mounted a watch at all ports and airports.
Gardai only discovered that the death of John Lees, of Vavasour Square, off Bath Avenue, was murder after the results of a 2nd autopsy. The first post mortem on the body - discovered last Friday morning - was inconclusive.
Sources today said they believed the motive for the murder was sexual. The dead man, it appeared, had been randomly chosen by the killer, who called to his house when he was alone.
The suspect has convictions in another jurisdiction for attempted murder, attempted rape and indecently assaulting a child.
He was identified from similarities with the murder and previous crimes he had commited.
Mr Lees, a married man, was found at his home at 9:50am last Friday. Gardai beleive he was killed between then and the previous Thursday night.

Crowded House

Ireland is to get another two internet providers, AOL and Esat are to join the crowded market, both of these offer an unusual pricing system.
AOL has been around for some time but now have a local Dublin pop number they offer an hourly rate where you pay so much each for each hour, Esat Internet looks attractive as it has no fixed contract and no monthly fee just a one off registration fee altho' calls to the service are charged per minute and is 3p daytime and 1.7p off peak.

George in the George?

Ireland's campest son, "Boy George" flew into Dublin yesterday hoping for a revival in his love life to mirror the revival in his musical career.
The camp star, who appears in concert tonight confessed: "my love life is pretty boring". He has still to find his perfect partner, he said.
Dublin men had better look out, "I will walk along the street and fall in love every five minutes", George added in an interview to an Evening Newspaper.
