The Townland of Haystown, Lusk, (1641 - 1798)

(Skerries Historical Society's February 2003 Lecture)

The members of Skerries Historical Society were treated to a very enjoyable paper entitled The Townland of Haystown, Lusk (1641 - 1798) on Tuesday, 11th. February. Maighréad Ní Mhurchadha did an enormous amount of research, in order to produce this very detailed paper.

This was the history of Haystown House and Estate in the Townland of the same name and bounded by Tyrrelstown, Horestown and Kenure. From 1641 the chief family name was Carbery until 1725, then Edward Folie is listed. After that we had Patrick Gentleman in 1735 and then the best known family - Ong or Onge. John Onge came to Haystown Estate in 1751. He was a qualified barrister, and at different periods he was High Sheriff of Dublin, where he had several properties. John Onge died in 1764.

His son, Abel Onge - an army captain - inherited the estate. Abel Onge is listed as Church Warden in Lusk Parish church. Later his son, also Abel Onge, was living in Haystown in 1800.

One of the most intersting aspects was the connection with a Moore family in the Isle of Man. Letters between the two families gave an insight into horticultural practices of the time not to mention the healthy smuggling trade between Rush and the Isle of Man.

This paper gave us a fascinating insight into the lives of the families who lived in Haystown House up to 1798. Maighréad expressed the wish that another researcher would take up the story from 1798 onwards.

A vote of thanks was proposed on behalf of the Society by Joe Clinton.
