After the A.G.M. we had extracts from a videoon the "Sack of Balbriggan", presented by Jim Walshof the Balbriggan Historical & Cultural Society. The event which triggered the "Sack of Balbriggan" was the shooting and killing of District Inspector Peter Burke R.I.C. and the injury to his brother. This happened on the 20th. September 1920 and was followed by a retaliation by soldiers and Black and Tans from nearby Gormanstown camp at 11 p.m.

They set fire to houses on Clonard St. (which was known as Sinn Féin Alley). Two local men who were members of the local volunteers, namely James lawless and John gibbons, were abducted from their homes and later bayonetted to death near Bridge Street.

Men, women and children were left homeless as a result of these terrible events. Thirty eight homes, four public houses and one factory were burned and left in ruins. Other towns in Ireland had similar experiences. The 20th. Sept. 1920 was also the date of the arrest of 18 year old student Kevin Barry in Dublin. He was later hanged in Mountjoy jail.

The balbriggan events have been commemorated in several ballads and an older Balbriggan resident was featured on the video singing one of these ballads.

John Harte thanked Jim Walsh on behalf of the S.H.S. for all the hard work which he had put into the making of the video and for presenting the show and a copy of the video to Skerries Historical Society.
