WHY A PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL?

Our parish has established a Parish Pastoral Council, where priests and people of the parish can work together to meet the pastoral needs and challenges of today. Many think this is a good idea as we have fewer priests and greater pastoral demands.
However, this is not the only reason nor the primary one. It is a matter of recognizing the many and varied gifts of the Christian community, of priests and people working together to offer leadership and ministry to our people.

In Baptism we are named and called to be members of the Church and part of the Church's mission. A Parish Pastoral Council of priests and lay people does not diminish the ordained ministry but recognises that we can minister to one another and serve our community best by calling on the many gifts and skills we have collectively.

We live in a new time and a changing culture. Leadership needs to recognise the dignity of the individual and the individual's desire to participate in making decisions that will affect his/her life. We hope, through the Parish Pastoral Council, to move towards greater shared responsibility and ownership of the Church of today - and of tomorrow.
