Adoption plan for gays is too risky

 Article from ‘The Irish Sun’24/4/00:-

FAMILY groups last night slammed British Government moves that could open the floodgates for gay adoption. Campaigners warned the plans would put kids at greater risk of abuse and lead to emotional and sexual problems. Valerie Riches of Britain's Family and Youth Concern, said: "Children need a man and woman to bring them up.

"It is a fact that then are more paedophiles among gay men than among the overall male community. That is surely an unaccejptabie additional risk to children. She accused the government of putting "the needs and wants of adults before those of children".

Archbishop of Westminster Cormac Murphy-O'Connor - leader of Britain's Catholics - also insisted the planned shake-up must NOT make it easier for gays to become parents.

He said: 'It would be in the best interests of a child to be brought ht up In a more normal relationship of a man and a woman.'

The planned national rules will make adoption easier and follows a fall in the number of adoptions in Britain from 20,300 in 1079 to 6,000 last year.

At the moment gays can legally apply to adopt - but almost all are screened out by social workers.

There is also a secondary article on the editorial page where “The Irish Sun” slams the idea saying “How can it be right to trust vulnerable kids emotional and sexual development to such “unusual” families.

Cruise Control

AN EAST Antrim Assembly man has urged police to consider fresh operations against so-called 'gay cruising' in a Newtown abbey park.

The park's reputation as a homosexual pick-up area has featured prominently in the debate on its future.

Local councillors visited the facility recently before approving an £830,000 upgrading plan which includes a series of RUC proposals for curbing 'anti-social behaviour' in the area. But Fraser Agnew, an East Antrim Assemblyman and Chairman of the Council's Development Committee, said: "I would hope that the police will consider what they can do at Hazelbank as RUC operations could produce dividends.

"When we held a recent daytime site meeting at the park it was quite obvious what was going on. "There were men walking around on their own and then disappearing into bushes. "Some councillors were taken aback at how blatant it was.

"Even if visitors didn't know about Hazelbank's reputation, it wouldn't take them long to put two and two together."A spokesman for Newtownabbey RUC said: "We are aware of the situation and will continue to take appropriate action."

Included in the new plan for the park are a sunken garden, new pathways and ramps, vegetation clearance, improved access and parking, better lighting, a new amenity grassed area at Macedon and repairs to stone towers. The Millennium Way pathway will also be enhanced with new railings and viewing areas plus ramped and stepped access at Macedon.

Other features of the upgrading are improvements to the motorway underpasses, new seating and signageThere is also some provision for the introduction of closed circuit television. The plans were drawn up for the council by consultancy firm MWA Partnership. (Source - Belfast Telegraph)

Lower age for gay consent is closer

PROPOSALS to lower the homosexual age of consent in Northern Ireland to 17 have moved a step nearer to law.

Peers, critical of the Government's plans, last night sidestepped an immediate confrontation by giving the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Bill an unopposed second reading.

Ministers have warned that they are ready to invoke the rarely-used Parliament Act, if peers block - for the third time - the plan to equalise the age of consent. The Parliament Act, used only five times since 1911, would prevent the Lords from repeatedly opposing measures which have clear support of MPs and ensure the Bill becomes law after a year.

In Great Britain, where the age of consent for heterosexual sex is already lower, the Bill would reduce it to 16. Attorney General Lord Williams of Mostyn told peers that inequality between heterosexuals and homosexuals was "the mark of an intolerant society", and that the House had held back reform for too long.

However, the Government is now facing guerilla action by Tory peers opposed to the measure. They intend to mount blocking tactics as the bill enters its detailed scrutiny stages by tabling a series of amendments to delay its passage.Ultimately, the strategy is set to force the Government's hand.

Last night's debate was dominated by fierce criticism of the move, with little sign that the determined mood in both camps is likely to change. In one concession, Lord Williams announced stronger safeguards to prevent abuse by those in positions of trust.

Restrictions on sexual activity between those in positions of trust - such as teachers - and the youngsters for whom they have responsibility could be extended to cover Scout and Guide leaders, youth workers, step-parents and baby-sitters, he said.

He urged peers: "It is necessary, deeply necessary, not to confuse what we may disapprove of with what must be criminalised."Baroness Young, a leading opponent, condemned the Government's decision to threaten use of the Parliament Act as "a parliamentary disgrace".

She claimed that the "overwhelming majority of the population" were against the bill, along with significant numbers of Labour peers and MPs. Source = Belfast Telegraph

Historic Day in Waterford

It was a landmark day for both the city's gay and lesbian community and Waterford Corporation yesterday (Thursday), when Mayor Pat Hayes became the first Waterford Mayor to officially welcome a gay organisaion to City Hall.

Opening a Statutory Agency Awareness Day, organised by the Waterford Gay and Lesbian Resource Group, Mayor Hayes referred to the need for equality in relation to sexual orientation and criticised discrimination of any form.

The Resource Group was formed in September 1999, under the auspices of the Waterford Area Partnership, following a number of informal meetings. The Group is a pilot project, according to Alan Brett, co-ordinator, and Thursday's was its first official event. "Our model is being examined with a view to setting up similar groups around the country. Before its launch, the gay and lesbian community in Waterford had no focus. Our aim is to channel people into something constructive'', he explained. "The Resource Group is not a service provider. We are more involved in training and education, with the aim of promoting gay and lesbian community development.''

Thursday's event was organised to raise awareness over the delivery of statutory services to the gay and lesbian community in Waterford. Delegates included members of An Garda Siochana, representatives of WIT, the South Eastern Health Board, Waterford Corporation and the Department of Social, Community and Family Affairs.

The event was an excellent success, according to Waterford Corporation's Equality officer Mary Quigley. She stated that, under the Employment Equality Act 1998, it is illegal to discriminate against a person over their sexual orientation and said this would be extended to the public arena through the Equal Status Bill, due to come into
law later this year. "A key issue for the newly formed City Development Board is to ensure that the local authorities are accessible to all'', she stated. ``The emphasis as far as Waterford Corporation is concerned is for inclusion for all.'' Yesterday's speakers included Patrick O'Leary of the Equality Authority, who discussed the input on recent equality legislation, including the Employment Equality Act 1998. Poverty with regard to lesbians and gay men and health issues, relating to gay HIV strategies were also discussed. (source:- Munster Express)

Finger licking good

The 'Irish Mirror' newspaper has published an interesting article on March 30th revealing that people with longer fingers are more likely to be gay.  Lesbians' ring fingers are longer compared to their index fingers, states research done by scientists. Gay men with older brothers also have longer ring fingers. And their genitals are bigger than those of straight men, claim the scientists. They think the differences are caused by the amount of male hormone testosterone that babies are exposed to in the womb.

The study was carried out in San Francisco, which has a large gay community. Lesbian finger-length ratios were "significantly more masuline" and did not differ much from those of heterosexual men. Their ring fingers were longer than those of straight women,
suggesting exposure to higher levels of foetal testosterone.
Gay men with no older brothers had finger lengths the same as heterosexual men. But those with older brothers matched the results found in lesbians. So the more older brothers a man has and the more foetal testosterone he is exposed to, the more likely he is to be gay.

Dr John Manning, head of biological science at Liverpool University has conducted similar research in Britain. He said: "We are trying to find out whether homosexuality is a cultural thing or whether it is an established condition which is set before we are born. Hetrosexual men, particularly those with older brothers and lesbians have extremely long fingers which is probably a result of higher than average testosterone levels in the womb. "A persons sexual orientation is probably determined in the first three months".

As well as having bigger genitalia, men with longer ring fingers tend to produce more sperm and testosterone. Studies have also shown that men with longer ring fingers are more likely to be left-handed and  suffer from depression. Musicians and some foot ballers have longer ring finger than normal. The study published in Nature Magazine, showed that gay men without older brothers had finger-length ratios the same as straight men. Scientists say this might indicate that factors other than hormones such as genetic influences, could also contribute to a persons sexual orientation. But the findings were dismissed by Michael Osborn of gay publication 'The Pink Paper'. He said "We are born the way we are. You cant distinguish a gay man by the length of this fingers. Homosexuality is determined by our genetic make-up". Click here for related article in The Examiner
