Tralee's Land Use and Transportation Study ('LUTS')
Announcement from Tralee Town Clerk, Michael McMahon - October 2000

'Tralee Vision and Strategy' is an exciting new project currently taking place in Tralee. The time has come to prepare a new Development Strategy (called a Land Use and Transportation Study or LUTS) for the rapidly growing town of Tralee and its environs. Tralee is a new growth area and 'gateway' for the south west and County Kerry with many development pressures. For the first time a Development Strategy is being prepared for Tralee and its environs. The Strategy will cover the Electoral Area - all villages and towns around Tralee, including Fenit, Ardfert, Abbeydorney, Blennerville and Castleisland - and will consider the role and function of Castlemaine, Milltown and Farranfore and, in the wider context, Killarney. The study will produce a Strategy for future development in the area for the period 2001-2021, i.e. a long-term twenty-year timescale.

The Strategy will guide how and where development should occur in the future, providing an imaginative and robust framework for future growth and development. It will account for transport and traffic requirements/pressures, land use needs, environmental considerations and the need for local facilities and services, such as schools, shops and jobs.

To aid the process, a complex transport model has also been prepared by the development team. It will examine in detail the traffic and transportation effects of existing and future development, as alternative strategies are developed.

WHY?
Tralee has been the focus of unprecedented development/growth over the last 10 years, which has resulted in huge demand for housing and associated facilities. This demand has had a significant impact upon transport and the need to travel not only for Tralee but also for its environs.

WHO?
The Strategy is being prepared by a specialist Consultant Team, who are led by Colin Buchanan and Partners (planning, transport and economic specialists) and are being assisted by Brady Shipman Martin (planning, urban design and landscape specialists) and Ryan Hanley & Associates (infrastructure and engineering specialists). They are working with Tralee Urban District Council and Kerry County Council.

THE COMMUNITY ARE NEEDED
The Team believes that the local community, comprised of people who live or work in Tralee and environs, are central to the whole process. Local people, its businesses and community hold a wealth of knowledge about the area and will, no doubt, have strong views about the current problems and about Tralee's future.

The Team has already conducted over 20 meetings with all key stakeholder organisations in the area. Now the Team needs to understand what type of town, area and development, the community wants in the future and also where it should occur.

PUBLIC MEETINGS IN TRALEE, ARDFERT AND CASTLEISLAND
Three Public Meetings were organised for Tues. 24th, Wed. 25th and Thurs. 26th October in Tralee, Ardfert and Castleisland respectively, where local people were able to outline what was important about Tralee and environs; what and how new development should be accommodated and their vision for the area. The venues and times of the meetings were as follows:
