Our meeting was held in Keane's Bus Bar on Tuesday 13th February 2007. The lecture entitled "The Establishment and Development of Steam Railways in North Co. Dublin" was given by John Redmond.
Mr. Redmond gave us a well researched and detailed talk on the events leading up to the establishment of the railway between Dublin and Drogheda.
There were many opposing views and opinions held by members of Parliament and prominent businessmen and landowners of the day.

The proposed routes were discussed at length - one inland and one coastal.
Finally after many years the coastal route was chosen and work commenced.
The service began in May 1844. The time taken on its trial run from Dublin to Drogheda was 58 minutes. Present day trains are taking about the same length of time.!
A vote of thanks was given by chairman Brian O'Byrne.
