Match Racing
Match Racing is something of a cross between fleet racing and team racing (though it pre-dates both). In a match race, two boats compete against each other. They spend as much time trying to go quickly as they do trying to slow their opponent down. This is different to a fleet race where avoiding other boats would usually be beneficial.
Match Racing is very much a minority sport within sailing. To organise a match racing event for a few sailors requires the same work as for a fleet racing event of many sailors. Match Racing is the basis of competition used for the America's Cup.
IUSA are organising the first ever Irish Intervarsity Match Racing Championships this winter.
