Why "In Visibilities" ?
Our chosen title signals our concern with the need to address the questions
of queer cultural presence in Ireland. There is a general and systematic
occlusion of gay and lesbian cultural practice, history and achievement.
The over-riding assumption that people are straight unless they declare
otherwise, serves to erase the gay and lesbian dimension to the general
culture. The penalties imposed on those declaring queerness help to further
obscure our presence, our visiblity. Actively addressing the paradoxes
of visibility and invisibility is an objective of the show.
