OutArt is an ongoing attempt to investigate and showcase Queer Art. Based in Ireland, we have had three annual shows to date. Each one is timed to coincide with early Summer Pride celebrations in Dublin. The fourth - CONFRONTATIONS - opens Tuesday 23rd June.

1998 - Confrontaions
1997 - Invisibilities
1996 - Pride In Diversity
1995 - Divine Virtue

This year's show opens next Tuesday at 6pm, at the RHA ELY Place, Dublin 2. Some invitations are still available, but please don't let the lack of an invite, prevent you attending. There are over 18 artists showing in the exhibition, and the catalogue and images will be available online after the opening on Tuesday evening.

We will mail free copies of the 98 catalogue to the first 50 requests sent by email or by post to Michael Wilson, HADCOM, NCAD, 100 Thomas St. Dublin 8, Ireland.

Here is the text of the original Call for Submissions for 1998

The OutArt Public Meeting - planned for Nov 30th 97 but subsequently postponed, will now take place on Thursday July 2nd 1998 at the RHA Ely Place, Dublin, during the 1998 Confrontations exhibition - time available shortly. We regret any inconvenience this change of plan may have caused.

Public Meeting

DIRECTIONS OUT: The Future Programme of OUTART

We plan to hold this on Thursday July 2nd 1998 during the Confrontations show at the RHA, Dublin.

QUESTIONS TO BE CONSIDERED:

Do we need or want exhibitions and artworks by queer, lesbian, gay, bisexual & transgendered artists? Where should these exhibitions take place? What kind of work? How should these shows be assembled, selected, curated? Who should be allowed show? Do we need altewrnative community-based art practices? Do we want a "blockbuster" international show? How should outart shows be financed? Should we expand beyond PRIDE?

A panel of invited speakers will open the discussion and then an open discussion and debate will follow. Everybody is welcome, admission free.

The list of speakers and the time of the meeting will be posted here as soon as it is confirmed ...

Activities

The Group meets every month in the National College of Art & Design in Dublin. It liases with the Pride Committee which is responsible for the co-ordination of a national programme of Pride events in Ireland. We organise public discussions and artists' talks in conjunction with the visual arts projects undertaken. The exhibitions present the work of invited artists and also work received through open submission. Each year a different selection panel produces a final list of participants based on an interpretation of a given theme or brief. We welcome the participation of new members in the organisation of future projects. (See contacts)
We would like to invite you to a public meeting to discuss OutArt's future plans and purposes during the 1998 show on Thursday July 2nd 1998 at the RHA Ely Place, Dublin. Time to be confirmed.

Possibities for the Future

Whilst the OUTART group by no means regards itself as a permanent institution we have already begun outline planning for the 1999 event and welcome the participation of new committee members to help develop the project. People interested in becoming involved should contact Henry Pim, OUTART, c/o NCAD, 100 Thomas Street, Dublin 8, Republic of Ireland

Ideas and proposals are still being discussed. OutArt would particularly welcome proposals and suggestions from anyone with an interest in the possible intersections between contemporary visual art and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered issues. Part of the process of developing further Out-Art initiatives is inevitably an interrogation of the basic rationale of attempting to bring these two terms together: visual art and queer culture. Thus we are planning a major public discussion "Directions Out: Future Projects for Qutart" on Thursday July 2nd 1998 at the RHA Ely Place, Dublin on precisely the issues at stake in attempting to foreground queer dimensions in contemporary visual arts etc.

As with our other initiatives we welcome suggestions or propsoals.

1998 - posted August 21st '97

Some of the key issues which have emerged in previous shows have been those of the internal diversity of lesbian and gay experience and the anxieties around making queer identities and desires visible. One of the recurrent issues to emerge from the 1997 show was the contested nature of the whole project of linking the terms "queer" and "art".

This is an issue which we wish to confront next year in a head-on way as it were, hence the title of our 1998 project CONFRONTATIONS.

The Title: CONFRONTATIONS

This title signals our wish to examine the possible confrontations implied or rendered explicit in the fact of "queerness". The questions we are putting to artists and audiences are: "Is lesbian / gay / queer art confrontational ?" "Who or What is confronted by the work of lesbian / gay / queer artists ?" "What is confronted by explicitly presenting work as Lesbian / Gay / Queer ?" "Is confrontation transgressive, subversive, revolutionary?" "Does confrontation reinforce pre-established positions or forge new ones?"

The kinds and aspects of confrontation we are proposing to address may be summarily described by the play of the following terms: sexuality and power, fear and pleasure, fantasy and actuality, disturbance and desire exhilaration and danger. The play of these terms can be understood as simple oppositions or as ambiguous complementarities.

Some of the particular confrontations within queer experience and queer visual culture which prompt us to adopt this theme are: The Confrontations with Homophobia. The Confrontations that we ourselves experience within the precincts of queer cultures. The Confrontations between self and other that appear as central to the dynamics of sexuality. The Confrontations in the explicit avowal of desire The Confrontations between the viewer and the work. The Confrontations of Queers with Queerness: Confronting politics, issues, and practices. We welcome you to submit work for consideration.

Thus we are planning a major Public Meeting

"Directions Out: Future Projects for Outart", during the 1998 show, in the RHA, Dublin, on precisely the issues at stake in attempting to foreground queer dimensions in contemporary visual arts etc. More details as soon as they are available.

"Confrontations" will be curated by Ailbhe Smyth, Director of the Womens Education Resource and Research Centre at UCD (University College Dublin), writer, activist and broadcaster.

The show will involve the participation of invited artists and work received through an open submission process. It may involve exhibition spaces north and south of the border, and in locations outside Dublin.

History

OutArt is a voluntary group which was set up in 1995 to promote the work of queer artists particularly in association with annual Pride events in Ireland. The group actively organises exhibitions and public discussions around issues of sexuality, community and art- practice. Previous OutArt shows have included:

1997 Invisibilities - at the RHA.
1996 Pride In Diversity - The City Arts Centre, Dublin.
1995 Divine Virtue - The first OutArt show at the Irish Film Centre, Dublin

The OutArt initiative is NOT rooted in the belief that there is a necessary or inevitable connection between sexual practices and art practices, or even between cultural identities and cultural production. Rather, we seek to create opportunities to explore notions of identity, pride, community and difference, with reference to visual arts practices.

OutArt Commitee Members

At various times OutArt has involved the participation of
Henry Pim, Louise Walsh, Billy Quinn, Mick Wilson, Tom Gleeson, Gerry Scott, and Deborah Ballard.

These people became involved by virtue of a shared interest in the Visual Arts (many are practising artists). They were interested in the possibilities of visual arts projects where questions of sexual identity could be explored in general terms.

OutArt have not sought to promote a standardised style or practice.
