New Irish and Related Music Releases January 2001

SLIGO FIDDLER. John Vesey. No number. We have managed to get our hands on this double CD of great Sligo music, recorded in Philadelphia between 1954 and 1975. It’s a limited edition and will not be re-issued. It’s the standard Sligo repertoire, played by a man who was an undoubted master. If there is another single record of music as good as this in 2001, it will have been a great year for Irish music.

PAST MASTERS OF IRISH MUSIC. Various artists. TSCD 604. This is yet another fine collection of Irish music assembled from 78s by Reg Hall. It features music by people such as Michael Grogan, The Belhavel Trio, Seamus Ennis, The Flanagan Brothers and many more.

CAISE CEOIL. Various artists. CICD 146. A sampler from the fine Connemara label Cló Iar-Chonnachta, featuring music and song from artists such as Ben Lennon, Paddy Canny, Charlie Piggott and others.

IRELAND TODAY. Various artists. ETHNIC B 6838. A compilation of songs and tunes from Patsy Ó Ceannabháin, Tom and Eamonn Doorley (of Danu), Máire Ní Mhaolchatha and more.

IRELAND; THE ART OF SEAN-NÓS. Róisín Elsafty and Treasa Ní Cheannabháin. A mother and daughter from the village of Barna in Connemara sing the songs of their native sean-nós tradition, both in English and in Gaelic.

TABHAIR AR AIS AN OÍCHE ARÉIR/ BRING ME BACK LAST NIGHT. Seoirse Ó Dochartaigh. SCD 007. A selection of songs sung in the mellifluous Irish of Donegal, songs both modern and traditional.

A COUPLE MORE YEARS. Ronnie Drew and Eleanor Shanley. PRCD 3405035. A selection of old and new songs, sung both solo and in duet, with a few stories from Ronnie.
