New Years Eve 1998

This New Years Eve saw Special Events being held in 'The Tivoli', 'Andrews Lane' and 'The George', our first review is from BrianyG

The George

Here's what I experienced on New Years in Dubberlin...I was in the George from about 20:30, it was slow enough to fill but by 22:00 it was jammers, by 23:30 ya literally couldn't move in the place. There were two bands on first, both were pretty OK, first one's name I didn't catch, second one were 'Cara'. Then on came Rebbecca Storm - def. not my cup of tea, but in fairness I have to say she got a great reception from the crowd. She sang what I presume were 'highlights' from musicals. The only songs I remember recognising were 'Jesus Christ Superstar' and something from 'Cats'. Yikes!! And would someone please take the girl shopping. I don't normally take much notice of women's clothes, but she was dressed like she'd come to do the washing up.

Anyhow's, who else would do the countdown in the George only the bould Shirley, with one last nasty joke for '98 about Stephen Gately (Shirley, hon, we all love ya, but would you ever make a new years resolution to start picking on someone other than little Stephie in '99), and at the stroke of midnight we had a disco version of 'Auld Lang Sine' and, needless to say, that song we've all waited 16 years to be able to dance to properly. That inauspicious start was followed by a fairly kewl clubbey set which slowly drifted back to handbag.

The crowd thinned out very quickly once the new year was seen in, which was maybe just as well because it really was jammed solid. It was great bumping into (squeezing up against, actually) so many people I'd met in '98, like reliving the year in miniature. The best thing about the George on the night was that the old bar was open to the club bar all night. It's a great pity they don't do that all the time like they used to. I know some of the people who hang out there are jerks, but even so it's a great way to take a break from the pandemonium next door.

Well, here's to another great year in Dubberlin.
