Elizabeth Colby Denny was born in 1832, 8 years before her mother married William Denny. She married John Riches on August 16th 1848 in St Peter's Walworth Newington. He was born between 1824-1827 in Harleston, the son of James Riches - Victualler.. Elizabeth was living at 8 Ayliffe Street, Newington and John at 15 William Street, Newington at the time of their wedding. On the 1881 census John and Elizabeth are living at South St Working Men's Club, Bishop Stortford, Herts. John was a coachbuilder. Elizabeth and John had 7children:
Hannah Riches was born June 24th 1852 in Newington and died Decmber 20th 1941 in Norwood. She married James Tilly October 1st 1873 in Bishop Stortford, son of Charles Tilley and Susannah Colby. Another case of marrying a relation! Hannah and James were living at 4 Domville Gr, Camberwell Surrey at the time of the 1881 census. James was a Shopman Tallow Chandler. They had 8 children:
Raynard Riches was born 1855 in Lambeth and married Ellen who was born in 1852 in Bishop Stortford. In 1881 Raynard was a grocer but unemployed. They were in Brighton at the time of the 1901 Census Raynard and Ellen had 6 children
Hedley Riches was born May 16th 1862 in Starston and died April 18th 1907 in Lambeth. He married Mary Louisa Cocke May 29th 1887 in Emmanuel Church, Camberwell. She was born January 29th 1864 in Bishop Stortford and died October 20th 1927 in Bishop Stortford. After Hedley died Mary ran a boarding house. Kit and Betty lived there at one time, also Bessie and George after they were married. Some of the lodgers were in the theatre. Mary used to foster children, hiding the fact that Better was illegitimate. Hedley and Mary had 5 children
Morteon Riches was born October 17th 1864 in Starston and died 18 January 1926 (?). He married Julie Elizabeth Dovey May 31st 1882. She was born about 1864 and died July 25th 1920. Moreton was an estate agent, auctioneer and valuer. His business was Moreton Riches, House and Estate Agents, Auctioneers & Valuers of 72 East Hill, Wandsworth. He also owned 3 off licences one of which was managed by Billy Tilley. After his death a stained glass window was inscribed in St Faith's Church. He was a Councillor in Wandsworth. Moreton and Julie had five children
Hedley ran the estate agents Moreton Riches. He was made a freeman of the city of London. He married Christine Norrise 1890-1976. Hedley and Chris lived at 5 Sloane House, Sloane Street. I remember them very well. This page has developed so much and I haven't finished so I will have to redo it as another web site! |
