This time of the year marks a mid-way point in
our annual programme of activities and therefore
an opportunity to look back and of course to look
forward.
Recent Meetings
Since our A.G.M. in October last, Hugh Ryan has
created a place in history for Miss Ethel Fletcher,
who lived for many years of her long life on the
Harbour Road. Peter Harbison introduced us
to the world of 18th century County Dublin as
immortalised by watercolourist Gabriel Beranger.
In February, Barbara Curtis of Balbriggan
Historical Society presented her paper on the
events of 1916 in north County Dublin and most
recently, Sam Shiels gave an illustrated talk on
the history of Skerries Lifeboat.

Adult Education and the Society
Invited by Geraldine McQuillan, local co-ordinator
of Adult Education for the V.E.C. the Society
undertook the presentation of a series of talks
under the heading "Skerries, History and
Heritage". Six subjects were covered: John Harte
spoke on education, Joe Clinton on agriculture and
the Clinton family Frank Whearity on Two Skerries
Volunteers c.1920, Bob Laird on the history of bus
services in Skerries, Maree Baker on Skerries
genealogies and Elizabeth Balcombe on the tambour
and worked muslin industry in Skerries in the 19th
and 20th centuries.
Heritage week 2002
The Society's participation in Heritage Week 2002
will take the form of an exhibition of material from
the archive. The exhibition is titled "Keeping the past for pride" and will be displayed in Ardgillan
Castle during the month of September. An archive
Room has been made available to us over the past
number of years and now thanks to the work of a
small team of Society members, the material has
been sorted and catalogued. The exhibition will
focus on bequests down through the years.
Thanks to Pauline & Richard Keane, (The Bus Bar) for continued hospitality.
