Aids to Genealogical Research
Publications:
Grenham,
John, ‘Tracing Your Irish Ancestors’ 1992, Dublin,
Gill & Macmillan, New Edition 1999
The Genealogist’s Bible, good all-round information for beginners to advanced,
good for earliest dates of surviving records of Catholic Parishes, also sources
of non Catholic records. 1992 edition contains manuscript nos. of GO records in
Manuscript room of National Library. Also gives lists of county sources for
each county.
Ryan,
J.G. ‘Irish Records: Sources For Family & Local History’ Salt
Lake City, 1988. Excellent
general guide, very good for individual county sources.
MacLysaght,
Edward, ‘Irish Families’ Dublin 1985 Ed. Irish Academic Press.
MacLysaght,
Edward, ‘Surnames of Ireland’ 1985 6th. Ed. Irish Academic Press.
MacLysaght,
Edward, ‘More Irish Families’ 1996 Ed. Irish Academic Press.
Matheson,
R.E. ‘Special Report on Surnames in Ireland’, Baltimore, 1982 Ed.
Printed in Irish Genealogy: A Record Finder (available in the local
libraries) This report lists all surnames which had five births or more
registered in 1890 in Ireland, and gives a breakdown of names for the
provinces.
Moody,
T.W. and Martin, F.X. ‘The Course of Irish History’, Dublin,
Mercier Press 2001 Ed. Excellent general
history of Ireland, which includes a chronology; each chapter is written by a
different author.
MacFirbis,
Dubhaltaigh, ‘An Leabar Genealach’ The Great Book of Irish Genealogies,1650. Edited
by Nollaig Ó Muraille, 5 vols. De Burca Rare Books, Dublin 2003-4.
Ó
Muraille spent 30 years translating and editing MacFirbis’s life work; it has
been published with original Gaelic on one page and English translation on
opposite page. It lists genealogies of families, Gaelic and Anglo Norman,
but great caution should be taken about the earlier genealogies as they are
impossible to verify, and are mixed with myth. The volumes are available to
browse on the open shelves of the National Library reading room, and
contain many indexes.
O’Donovan,
John, Editor ‘Annals of the Kingdom of Ireland by the Four Masters’,
7 vols. Dublin, 1851. Now available
online at : www.ucc.ie/celt/published.html along with other rare books and collections, and are easily
down-loadable.
