Kilcummin

The reason I visited this holy well was to see the two standing stones that are said to mark the spot where St Cumin was buried. These two stone slabs pictured left, are more like Cross pillars, but there is little evidence of any crosses on them. The standing stones are in the next field South of the well and North of the ruined church, in what I presume was an old graveyard.

I was delighted to find that the Holy Well, pictured right is in a small enclosure along with two small cairns. These two cairns are now two stations of a Christian pilgrimage to the well. The well is pictured in the enclosure along with the two cairns below. If you are around the Killala Bay area then I would recommend you to pay a visit to this holy well.

Situated: The Well is situated in Ballinena just South of Kilcummin, from Ballina go North through Killala, take a right after you cross Palmerstown bridge then take another right at the second crossroads, after about 3 kilometres there is a small pier on you right the well is 200 metres past the pier.

Discovery Map 24: G 213 372. Last visit April 2004.
