Thomas Carter (1735-1804)

 
Composer  Born in  Dublin 1735?  (Several dates are suggested as there was another  Thomas Carter also born Dublin  confusion reigns supreme)  He was brought up in the Choir of Christ Church Cathedral and later became organist at St. Werburgh's Church Dublin  1751-1769.

He later travelled in Italy and perhaps in India.

His opera "The Rival Canditate" was successfully produced at  Drury Lane Theatre 1st February 1775. It was performed  regularly for the next ten years and was also performed in the USA. This was followed ob "the Milesian" in 1777 and "the Fair American "1782. He is mentioned in John O'Keefe's Recollections. He died in London 1804.
