Philip Cogan (1748/50-1834)

Composer, Organist and Pianist  Born Cork  1748 or 1750. (one reference states "possibly born in Doncaster 1757" but Grove's agrees on a Cork birth and 1748). Chorister and choirman  of Cathedral of St. Finn Barre, Cork. Stipendary of Christ church Dublin 1772. Died 1834 and was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery Dublin (Grove's 1833). Works: 2 Comic Operas ("The Ruling Passion" - Libretto Leonard McNally Capel St, Dublin 1778 and "The Contract" in collaboration with John Stevenson - Libretto Robert Houlton Smock Alley Theatre, Dublin 1782),Various Anthems, 6 Sonatas for  pf. And Violin 1788 etc.

As a teacher he had some famous students including : Michael Kelly (Tenor friend of Mozart), Tomas Moore (Song Writer), and Michael Rooke/Rourke (Opera Composer).
