TOM KARL (Tenor 1846-1916)

 

Tom Karl Born Dublin  19th January 1846. Died Rochester New York 19th March 1916.He studied in England under Henry Phillips and in Italy  under Sangiovanni and Trivulzi. Sang in Italian Opera for many years. He later went to America with Parepa-Rosa to sing in a season of Opera in English, he settled down in New York.

He had a remarkable success as Ralph Rackstraw in HMS Pinafore in 1879 and decided to give up Grand  Opera as a result of this acclaim. Some years later he , together with H C Barnabee and W H MacDonald  organized the Famous "Bostonians" Considered to be the greatest Light opera company at that time. Their greatest success was De Koven's  Robin Hood. He had a repetoire of 150 Operas and Light operas. He retired in 1896  living for some years in New York  where he became the director of an operatic school and also as a private teacher in Rochester.

I am not sure that he sang in this.

1871

 La Scala. Milan. 15 February.  Beer. Elizabetta d'Ungheria.with Fricca as Elizabetta & Karl as Giorgio. This may not be Tom Karl as it only says "Karl " in Gatti's La Scala annals However the period is right.

1872 

Teatro Paganini Genova Italy 5th December  Marchetti. Romeo e Giulietta. With A  Spaak & C Cappeli.

1877
