Frederick Ranalow was born in Dublin in Kingstown (Dunlaoghaire) on 7th November 1873 he was taken to England at an early age and in fact began his career in music at St. Paul’s Cathedral London. Where he sang for four years in the choir. He later studied at R A M London under Randegger He later went to New Zealand with MELBA in 1909 in what capacity I am not sure. He sang with The Beecham Opera Company in 1914 at Drury Lane from May 20th to 25th July. One of the operas in which he sang was Prince Igor [English Premier]. He also sang Figaro, Sachs, and Papageno under Beecham. In 1916 he starred with Rosina Buckmen in the Premier of Ethel Smyth’s “The Boatswain’s Mate” at the Shaftsbury Theatre London. He later made some recordings with Buckman from this opera. Covent Garden reopened in 1919 after the first World War. Beecham took a lease on the Theatre from November 1919 to April 1920. It was in Covent Garden during this time that Ranalow sang Boheme, Falstaff, The Meistersingers, Nozze di Figaro,Segreto di Susanna, Tannhauser, Tristan, and Zauberflote. In 1920 that he started his Marathon run in “The Beggars Opera” at The Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith. By the time the run ended 1500 performances had been given.. A fantastic record by any standards.
