A CELEBRATION
FOR THE UN INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF THE OLDER PERSON
1999
The successful ageing of our population is
one of the triumphs of civilization at the end of the second
millenium. Creativity in later life has been notable among composers:
examples include Schutz (Passions), Bach (B Minor Mass), Bruckner
(8th and 9th symphonies), Verdi (Requiem, Otello, Falstaff) Wagner
(Parsifal), Shostakovich (15th symphony and 15th string quartet),
Stravinsky (Rake's Progress, Agon) and Lutoslawski (3rd and 4th
symphonies).
As part of the celebration of the UN International Year of the Older
Person 1999, AGE-RELATED HEALTH CARE highlighted performances of
music composed in later life, in collaboration with RTE and with the
co-operation of the Arts Council. Activities included:
