Turkey Race 2005

It's that time of year again! Here's a message and the race notice from organiser Jeanne Wilson -

Dear Clubs and fellow paddlers,
Hard to believe, but it’s that time of year again and I am delighted to announce to you details of this years charity Turkey Race, Sunday, December 18th 2005 at 2pm Templemills, Celbridge to the Salmon Leap, Leixlip in aid of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (see poster below).
Following the success of last year’s event, in addition to the Classic Canadian race there will be a Senior and Junior fun race with optional fancy dress for both classes. With safety of prime consideration we would not encourage juniors or others without river experience to participate, given the time of year and the likelihood of a flood or high water conditions. While we encourage fancy dress and look forward to seeing your costumes on the day it is also imperative that paddlers are suitably attired with cags, helmets and buoyancy aids.
Last year, thanks to your participation and generosity we raised a whopping €1300 and we hope to exceed that figure this year! Celbridge Paddlers has pledged to donate all entry fees gathered on the day. Official sponsorship cards are available from SVP head office only and are easily obtained upon phoning 01- 8198409, ask for Louise. The SVP are expecting your calls and will post out cards to individual addresses or in bulk to a club address.
If you have queries on any of the above, or you wish to make a donation or contribution of a spot prize for the raffle please do not hesitate to contact either Aisa Cooper on 086-6051787 or Jean on 086-4083790.

Is mise le meas,

Jean Wilson

ICU Sprint Regatta 2005 cancelled

The ICU Flatwater Racing Sprint Regatta 2005 due to be held at the National Rowing Centre, Inniscarra, Co. Cork on Saturday 24 September was cancelled due to bad weather. Strong southerly crosswinds were forecast and this can lead to dangerous conditions on the lake.

ICU Sprint Regatta 2005 - Sat 24th September

The ICU Flatwater Racing Sprint Regatta 2005 will be held at the National Rowing Centre, Inniscarra, Co. Cork on Saturday 24 September. Last year was the inaugural event and was a great success. Eamon Fleming is the main organiser with Celbridge Paddlers supplying most of the officials and helpers. Hopefully there will be as big an entry this year as there was last year with a large turnout from Celbridge Paddlers and Salmon Leap.

Check out the Marathon Canoeing website for details and an entry form.

Liffey Descent 2005 (3/9/2005)

Congratulations to everyone who competed in this year's Liffey Descent. Traditionally there is a large entry from Celbridge Paddlers and 2005 was no exception. Conditions on the day were perfect both for competitors and spectators (thanks to God for the sunshine and the ESB for the flood!). Some of the highlights were -

Sean Marchetti - 1st Men's Junior GP (2.37)
Tadgh McIntyre/Donal McIntyre - 1st Racing Canadian Doubles (2.47)
David Buggy - 2nd Junior K2 (2.34)
Ciarán Fleming/Daragh Fleming - 3rd Junior K2 (2.15)

Other club members in contention were -

Keith Burke - 4th Men's Junior GP
Fintan Mitchell - 5th Men's Junior GP
Fearghal Walsh/Michael Brennan - 8th Senior K2
William Ellis - 8th Men's Junior GP
Brendan Buggy/Peter O'Toole - 8th Touring Kayak Doubles
Paraic Keane - 9th Men's Senior GP

Well done also to the many others who battled bravely to finish the race (some dry and some not so dry!) - it is a significant achievement.

Does anyone have any photos and/or reports of the race?
