GSD is currently looking for male and female volunteers to join their team in
the provision of their confidential listening, information and support service.
This service is provided to callers from Dublin and througout Ireland. Details
on how to become a volunteer are as follows;
To become a volunteer with GSD you should first write to the Director requesting
an application form. Prospective volunteers are then invited to an interview.
This is really to give us a chance to chat, provide some more information about
what we do and to find out a little bit more about the applicant.
For successful applicants, the next step is the training course (which lasts
for about six weeks). This takes the form of one night per week (lecture and
role-play style) where a lot of focus is put on confidentiality, call technique,
listening skills, process and procedure, safer sex etc.
Following this, trainees move on to a period where they are present when active
volunteers take calls. This is so that they can experience our typical call
types and get a feel for the real process of a call etc. Remember, and I can't
stress this enough - confidentiality is paramount during this period and from
then on in any volunteer’s active duty.
Once this period finishes, trainees begin taking calls themselves, supported
by established volunteers. The volunteer helps the trainee with the call
supports them on process and generally talks to them about their experience of the call
etc. After a probationary period and assuming the trainee still wants to
continue
- they are again polled for their experience, feedback etc. and if all goes
well they will become full members of GSD. Of course, all volunteers continue
to support and encourage each other throughout their time on the switchboard.
