Flytrap @ the Forum theater
Waterford
They say a change is as good as a
rest, so with this intention I took myself to the southeast corner
of the country to visit the new once a month, gay disco club in
Waterford city.

Being only a 101 miles from Dublin
and an abundance of relatively cheap B+B's in the area, it should have
attracted a bigger following from Dublin but I did see some familiar
club faces from the Pod and the George which was nice.
It certainly was worth the trip for
me. I had a good time there. Quite a bit of effort was put into
promoting the venue and event, and I think it paid off.
It also showed that there is a need
for a dedicated gay club experience in the south east. Quite a large
hinterland to serve plus the fact that there are a lot of WITTies in the
city too. Those being Waterford Institute of technology guyz and
gurlz... quite an amount of gurlz actually :-) three of the top tables
were full of them.
Obviously the abundance of computer
literate WITTies lead to the club having its own website - which
cant be said for most of the Dublin clubs (the exception being Q&A +
The Pod) so its to this site at http://fly.trap.tripod.com/
that I looked for directions to the forum theater which is really on the
outskirts of the city - just over the bridge. Its only the second gay
club that I ever went to that I was able to park beside the venue and
one of the few that I was never stopped by bouncers going in with
the usual "Hey lads do u know this is a Gay/alternative/not
straight disco"!!
It is actually in a theater so the
cash office and cloak are just inside the door. Obviously a local WITTie
was handing out business cards with the site url on it inside the door
so that we would be able to check up on the next event-- cool, it was
cheap but effective - one for everyone in the audience!
Once inside!! Boy it was huge! none
of yer 'scutty' little dance floors of the Dublin clubs. Nearest thing
size wise I could compare it to would be Red Box in Dublin. The bar ran
the full length of the right hand side and huge tables covered the main
body of the theater, each with its own (now essential) nite light. These
tables could seat up to 12 or more ppl and ppl mixed in at your own
table which was nice with out being on top of you at the same time. I
arrived just after 11pm and there was a good few ppl there already at
the bar etc. unlike Dublin where u get ppl only going out at midnight,
the locals here were set to enjoy themselves for a long night.
And enjoy themselves they did. The
music finished after two thirty am, followed by a leisurely sit around
for another 20 minutes before the bouncer began their ritual
shouting!! By 11.40 ppl were on the dance floor and once the ice was
broken, then, more and more did their stuff. It was a very
comfortable amount of ppl for the dance floor, with no shoving, pushing
or spilt drinks. Even one dyke managed to dance in her bare feet! So
obviously there was no dress code in regards to sneakers or bare feet
:-)
Speaking of feet and WITTies, what is
it with the people at that disco. they had the strangest taste in
footwear I ever did see! Actually I didn't see any sneakers at all but
nearly every guy there was clad in some heavy duty footwear. Christ!,
some of them u would have needed planning permission for. I mean its not
that these guys were vertically challenged or that, but it must be
de-rigor to wear black leather shoes with metal decorations and two
inches of rubber between soul (sic) and floor. that's just an aside!
some nice guys there of all ages - a very good balance, though obviously
the predominance of ppl from WITT as they seem to have know each other
quite a bit, but don't let that stop u.
Speaking of cute guys one of the
cutest, IMHO was the Dj from Galway. Fly trap are going to have a
different dj every month which is a great idea, so the event doesn't get
type cast in terms of music. His cute looks made me over look the
"teabreaks" between tracks early on in the night. His mixing
skills improved as the night went on. Maybe it was the fact that the rig
appeared to be belong to the theater and wasn't his own. Either that or
I am too used to Dj Karen and Fluffy in Dublin.
Remember too that the lighting
arrangements was that of a theater, so supplementary lights and a smoke
machine were brought in which helped a bit - u wont be dazzled by
glitter balls and 'robo-strobes'
By all opinions the music was
excellent and very danceable though Sandstorm by Darude would have been
the icing on the cake for me! I wouldn't be truthful if I didn't have
one minor whinge, nothing to do with the disco actually but can the
organizers arrange to have the infrared heaters under the stage turned
off, cos they nearly made me pass out. these things were blasting out
heat rays three foot away from ppl on the dance floor.
Overall verdict then. yeah go for it
- well worth a trip down. "Now you are sucking diesel boyz"
