Poorly lit back alleyway
running up from Christy Ring bridge (from the Opera House) . Difficult
to find and identify, Obscure and awkward entrance. Part of the road
forms the western boundary of Murphy's Brewery. Several sets of steps
link up to Upper John St. A few minutes from Roman House and Kinley
House. The street number is crudely painted next to climb in
door within an industrial door. Then a metal stairs, a low level
timber porch, an unmarked door and a confessional style enquiry hatch
have to be negotiated.
Make it your business to know where the exit
and escape routes are because the place is a fire trap. The ceiling is
oppressively low,the building was an old warehouse. The lighting
standard is lousy What passes as cruising areas are in almost total
darkness but constantly lit up by opening doors.
The changing room is
cramped but adequate, the shower tacky but functional, and the video
room: big with a sticky synthetic carpet and worn sweat stained
armchairs. The sauna is small and sometimes cold. Smoking every where
despite notices. The "private" cubicles could do with better
catches.
Condoms & lube have to be purchased at the entrance
Patrons vary from out locals to on the way home married closet cases.
The age ranges from occasional early 20ies to occasional late 50ies.
The place is difficult to get into, has a terrible layout, can
be dirty and unkempt and a bit furtive and shameful in
atmosphere. In so far as it is the only such facility in Cork City it
survives but there is room for a well run establishment.
