Lynch's decided to become
a 100% gay venue in May 2000. It first began as just a Saturday night
venue and allowed no women but due to an outcry that policy changed,
women can now enter the bar but at a cost of £50 each, Men are
always admitted free of charge. The venue contains a dark room for those who might be out for more than a quiet pint.
The Lollipop club is on Saturday nights
and Sunday afternoons from 4pm. The pub is very central located just one minute
away from Vicar Street.

Can I
just say a big Thank You to Lynches for the post pride Teddy Bears
Picnic. After years of never getting anything back from the gay bars
here was a bar which after a few months showed its appreciation of its
customers by providing a first class bar-b-que. There was a great
atmosphere and it really felt like a gay "community" for
once . There was a good crowd there and lots of really good food which
was great...I had thought it would be one sausage and thats your lot!
They kept serving the food I think until about 10.30 p.m. ...I say I
think cause I kind of lost track of time at that stage! And at no
stage did they charge anything!! A rarity in this commercial world we
live in!!

Lynchs pub on Thomas
street is one of this years success stories. It is located on the
right hand side of Tomas street coming from the Christ church end of
town. Its a handy walk (though not long) from the city center. The
best landmark building would be the IAWS building which is illuminated
at night, so u cant miss it. For some reason, it is a single story
building on an otherwise mainly two and three story streetscape. Very
easily missed, but the giveaway is the two doormen standing outside.
It enforces a no
sneakers policy, so u were warned! doormen were polite but firm, but
try and get there b4 midnight as any attempts to gain entry after that
appear to be at their discression!
The layout of the pub
appears a bit peculiar in the sense that they seem to have taken in
charge a lane way adjacent to the main pub. This has been partially
covered in and provides a welcome relief from the crowds in the main
building. Entry on saturdays is through this door. Tables and chairs
are provided in this section and there looks to be loads of room
for further expansion at the back. On summer nights this
would be the place to be but the overall view from here is not
spectacular to say the least not helped by the aroma of hops from the
nearby Guinness brewery.
The main bar is
attractive though narrow and has been steadily decorated with
"gay icons" (with a tendency to leather stuff).
toilets are at the end of the main bar and now that it has gone gay 7
days a week i presume the ladies has been converted as well. No condom
machine was in evidence which for a put that has a errr dark room! is
sadly missing.
Naturally in the course
of research I had to check this room out! You use the same door as for
the gents toilet but swing to the right at the end of the corridore
and up the stairs. Its just as the name says "a dark room"
so dont expect videos and tv sets. Best advice is to bring a
flourescent watch!!! On saturday nights it becomes a hot sweatty
mass of guys, not for the faint hearted. (exit Pepsi_Boy)
Without a doubt Lynchs
provides the best value as regards the price of drinks on the gay
scene, with pints at £2.50 and coke at £1.30. As they dont have an
entry fee except for women!! u are saving immediatly in comparison to
other clubs who charge an entry fee after ten pm, so money saved
= more drink money:-)
It started out having
gay nites on a Saturday evening- best time to go there is from 9.30
and it goes on till 2.20 or there abouts. It gets very crowded
on Saturday nights with a lot of guys wearing leather, combats, denim
etc. if u can combine going to Lynchs on the first or third saturday
of the month when there is a leather fetish nite in one of the local
saunas, then u will be justly rewarded! General age group would be mid
twenties to thirties. As yet it hasnt caught on with the very young
queen set.
During my visit
during the week (c 10pm) there was quite a few ppl there, mainly
couples and mainly the age group mentioned above. At this stage i
wouldnt regard it as happy cruising ground for the single gay except
maybe on a saturday nite when the goods can be sampled upstairs! Bar
staff are friendly and over worked especially at the weekend. the
efficient carlos provided me with a copy of the latest GCN (Local Gay
newspaper). am not sure if it was ment for taking home or not ( a bit
like the dentish waitroom magazine syndrome!) Am sure the distribution
dept at GCN will be happy to stock them with more papers. I cant
finish with out mentioning one of their other staff assets! he
works tirelessly collecting glasses etc on busy nites and is on
the door during the week and on sundays. dont know his name but, IMHO
(in my humble opionion) he is a walking greek god! Love his biceps and
his nice short haircut. Certainly a diversion! Apologies if he is str8
but he would make a handsome prince for anyone!. My recommendation,
dont miss it.

Unfortunatly this is just a review of
the outside of lynch's - it's a good bit outside of town but we'd heard
good things so decided to take the 20 minute walk to see what all the
fuss was about but the *cute* bouncer at the door wouldnt let us in as
we were wearing runners. Now there is no sign up saying no trainers or
nothing in the adverts about it. It's kind of depressing getting refused
from a bar on thomas street. We ended up going to Vicar Street down the
road followed by the George who thankfuly have relaxed their trainers
policy lately. Hopefuly I can bring a review of inside lynch's next week
as i'm heading to Clarks later for a new pair of shoes.

The nearest Dublin pub to the Guinness brewery boasts good drinks,
a clean and pleasant atmosphere with efficient and friendly staff. Gay on Sat
nights, unsure about other nights. Comfortable seating available early in
the evening but by midnight it was crowded and standing space was difficult
to find. The entirely male crowd ranged from those just emerging from the
disco bunny era to the more mature man. The sober fashion didn't reach the
level of the pub mascot, a large cuddly bear sporting handcuffs and leather cap,
sitting behind the bar. Concession to gay decor sensibilities involved an arrangement of leftover millennium
candles flickering in the January wind on the outside patio, frequented only
by the brave. Reputed to have a backroom, upstairs. Open to 1AM. Security
on the door, on-street parking outside. Located in a quiet part of Thomas
Street, mainly offices and the brewery nearby, but not far from some notorious
public housing. Best approached along Thomas St, not from the river. Overall an enjoyable night out in pleasant surroundings, a good place to meet your friends,
but if you want to park at the door and sit by the bar, arrive early.
