Well, after 6
months in Dublin I think I finally to vent my frustration and gripes
with the George, in fact it was Pepsi Boy's comments on how nice the
bouncers at Spy were on new years eve which pushed me over the edge.
I commuted to
Dublin for some 18 months prior to moving here and always normally ended
up in the George, but always week days and not always every week, so a
somewhat chequered view, which is probably what most tourists get of the
place - a nice place to drink in, good music and a good crowd.
That was then
though, I now have 6 months of living in Dublin under my belt and
regularly visiting the George with the following observations to offer:-
1. The doormen -
are they superior to us, I think this every time I go in there or maybe
they think they are, one of us has got it wrong I am sure. This Xmas was
the final straw though, as usual at this time of the year and during
pride there were queues - we waited for 30mins trying to figure out why
only 2 at a time were getting in every 5mins or so when we finally got
to the front only to be told, you will now have to use the side door - I
have to queue again? No fear and off I trundled to Out on the Liffey.
More on this point later. On a good note though there was one night when
this particluary obnoxious str8 woman was very quickly ejected by the
bouncers - my belief in justice was restored not to mention the belief
that the bouncers do keep an eye on what is going on.
2. Dress Code -
yeah I know this seems to have been relaxed recently but please please
someone explain the logic of it to me as I cant see it.
3. Age group - I
have seem people in here as young as 14 and they seem to be very good
friends of the staff!!
4. Sunday evenings
- as a visitor the bingo was great but after 6 months it has become
tedious. The acts put on are excellent but I have to say the bingo
itself and the constant wittering have driven me elsewhere on a Sunday
5. Barmen - in the
main nice guys but service can be very painful downstairs - upstairs
always seems to have it licked.
In summary, its my
belief the George has become complacent in its attitude towards its
"Regular" customers forgetting that its these people who bring
in the dosh all year round and not just at those busy times. In addition
to this there is the underlying attitude that does come across as
"We are popular, we know we are and if you dont like it then go
elsewhere".
The pink pound here
in Ireland is becoming a force to be reckoned with and its about time
these nice folks at the George got off their complacent bums and took
notice - I know my visits have dwindled recently and for all my whinging
above I still think its a shame.
God, do I feel
better now :-)
Mike (on missionary
work minus his kilt).
