Tuesday Jan 16th 2001 will be the biggest Q+A to date - aparantly it will never be the same again. The whole format is changing, the organisers have told us that the club is getting so popular they were tempted to make it more frequent, either weekly or twice weekly. However due to the huge work involved with the club and the annoyance of a full time 9 to 5 job this isnt possible.

What is going to happen is still a bit of a mystery and the Q+A lads are keeping their plans firmly under lock and key. It looks as if the Q+A family is going to grow tho' with different music styles creeping in. Soon Q+A will dwelve in to the back catalouges of music and pick out the best tunes of the 70's, 80's and 90's - sounds a bit like classic hits 98fm to us but Q+A promise that the club will still keep its alternative music policy.

The promotors are also hoping to change the night of Q+A - while Tuesdays are popular with the student crowd (the club attracts on average 200 people a night) it is a  bad night for the promotors, who treat the club as a hobby.

Interview

Q: Why did you start Q+A

A:  Every gay venue in Dublin practically plays the same music, you could go to any club, any night and hear the same music either dance or camp disco. Dont get me wrong, I love dance music and am a big fan of classic pop but I love alternative, rock and indie and felt the scene could do with a bit of variety.

Q: What styles of music does Q+A play

A: Exactly what it says on our adverts - rock, indie and pop,  well with some dance, funk, goth and a tiny bit of metal thrown in. At the begining it was very hard to judge what the crowd would be into, we decided to keep it fairly light at first, altho we got a lot of requests for heavier bands like NIN, Green day etc.. We also got a lot of requests for older bands so we've added the pixies, the undertones, the buzzcocks, the clash, the Jam etc.. to our setlist

Q: What are the big crowd pleasers at Q+A

A: It's hard to say - the nosier the tune the busier the dance floor, the cure surprisingly are very popular, popular 80's hits from EMF etc.. also go down well. Song 2 by blur and Teen Spirit by nirvana always have people running to the dance floor.

Q: who are your favourite bands

A: Have 100's of favourite bands - infact my music taste has varied a lot since starting Q+A - one night we had a suggestion box for people to reccomend tunes for us to play - I ended up hearing a lot of music I hadnt heard before, i'm now a big cure fan and I wasnt before. Personal favorites tho are Suede, Pearl Jam, NIN, Stone Roses, Nirvana.

Q: Where do you see Q+A going from here

A: After January, we're probably not going to do any more Tuesday nights - we're either going to move to a more sociable night (for our own sanity) or we're going to do less frequent but larger Q+A parties. Kind of like a super club. It's funny in a way that the club is getting bigger every month but we're deciding to make it less frequent, normally it would be the other way around. I expect to do the first Q+A party night in March - it will be like 2 clubs in 1, something like 'popstars' in London but i'll wait until January 16th before even thinking about that.

The next Q+A is on Tuesday Jan 16th - Eamonn Dorans - Temple Bar (from 11.15)
