This year marks Belfast’s 10th annual celebration of Pride, a milestone in the context of Northern Ireland and Belfast Pride 2000 have a hectic schedule to mark the occasion.
Running from 29th July to 5th August the week will begin with a high profile conference themed ‘Sexual Diversity’ held on the 29th in the city’s prestigious Waterfront Hall. Speakers at the conference include well known gay activist Peter Tatchell, representatives from the newly formed Equality Commision for Northern Ireland and the Human Rights Commision. Saturday evening sees the official launch of Pride 2000 headlined by Ireland’s hottest new boyband ‘InFocus’.
Later, a choice of venues celebrate the opening of Pride Week with an Art & Jazz Social evening taking place in The John Hewitt Bar, in Donegall Street, including a unique open-air lesbian and gay film show in the Courtyard and for clubbers the Kremlin, Voted Best Irish Gay Venue of the Year, kick off the week with the return of last year’s popular theme night ‘Christmas in July’.
Throughout the week events range from community based workshops, including a Spirituality Workshop, Safer Sex Workshops, for both gay men and lesbians, to broader panel discussions including Have Your Say, an open meeting on policing, Towards Equality, Gay Rights in Northern Ireland, with guest speakers Chris Morris and Mark Watson (Gay.Com and formerly Stonewall) and Queer Bedfellows an opportunity to meet and address local Northern Irish politicians.
Queerspace , the Belfast based gay and lesbian collective, show us their wares with a multimedia gallery of video, art and music on Thursday at the Arcadia Café,North Street. An Internet Workshop for the gay community, hosted by Gay.Com, the world’s largest onlone gay commnity takes place on Thursday 1st August in Revelations Internet Café in Shaftsbury Square.
Belfast’s newest gay club night at Milk in Tomb hosts a theme night on Monday and the ever popular midweek venue of White’s Tavern, in Winecellar Entry boasts a double delight on Wednesday with a live band playing in a marquee outside while the festivities continue inside the bar with the Regal MC disco. The Juice Bar at the Duke of York, the monthly Women-Only disco opens it’s doors to all on Thursday night while the Kremlin hosts Heat One of the all new Mr Gay Ireland, hosted by Mr Gay UK 2000, Harry French.
The week culminates on 5th August with the Annual Pride Parade through the streets on Belfast City Centre. This year promises to see the biggest and most colourful Pride Parade in Belfast’s history with a Samba Band, floats from all over Ireland, North & South, Fire-eaters, stilt walkers, jugglers and face painters.
The Grand Finale is on the Saturday night when Drag Queens, Vada bon Reve, Miss Panti, Chloe Shagalot, Baroness Titti von Tramp, Shirley Temple Bar, Siobhan Broadway (reigning Miss Alternative Ireland 2000), Revvlon (runner up Miss Alternative Ireland 2000) take to the stage to prepare the way for headline pop sensations SCOOCH in the Pride Ball, Festival of Flowers when Kremlin is transformed with fresh flowers adorning every available space.
Gay Belfast has finally come of age this year and they’re not turning back.
