8th Dublin Lesbian & Gay Film Festival

3-7 August 2000

Press Release

Now in its eighth successful year, the Dublin Lesbian & Gay Film Festival will be launched by film-maker and playwright Gerry Stembridge at the IFC at 6.30pm on Thursday 3 August.

The current trend in lesbian and gay feature films is for movies which appeal to a very wide audience, like "Just One Time", "But I'm a Cheerleader!" and our Opening Film, "Edge of 17". Also in this category are "The Broken HeartsClub", which moves into "The Big Chill" territory, and "Relax... It's Just Sex", which features a strong performance by Jennifer ("Bound") Tilly.

Learning how to come to terms with grief and loss is the subject of "The Weekend", which won the Special Jury Prize at the Seattle International Film Festival and stars Gena Rowlands and Brooke Shields. We welcome director Brian Skeet and producer Ian Benson to present this important film.

We are delighted to premiere the latest movie from maverick French director Francois Ozon("See the Sea", "Sitcom"). Based on a play written by Rainer Werner Fassbinder when he was only 19, "Water Drops On Burning Rocks" is Ozon's cinematic tribute to the great German director. We welcome to this year's Festival Forum ('Gender Transits') distinguished independent film-maker Monika Treut, whose Berlin 'Teddy' winner, "Gendernauts", moves into the territory beyond gender; also taking part is Marco Chiandetti, director of "Portion of a Lady", a video about three London drag performers.

This year's Film Focus is on the new Spanish Language Queer Cinema, and there's a particularly strong Shorts Programme this year, including an Irish Shorts Retrospective curated by Barry Dignam to include a Q&A with Irish lesbian and gay directors. Our Millennium Repertory Season comprises a diverse selection of their favourite twentieth century queer films by Emma Donoghue, Michael Dwyer, Cherry Smyth and Colm Toibin. Bill Hughes will introduce his RTE documentary on Irish lesbian and gay lives from the time of Wilde, "The Love Which Dare Not Speak Its Name".

As our Closing Gala we present the hit of this year's London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival, "Cine-Oke". Our Hostess with the Mostest will persuade audience members to sing along with the stars through the best musical moments in cinema history in what promises to be a night to remember.
