These were the prices displayed on the forecourts of the stated garages in Tralee on Wed. 21st Nov. 2001.
The results of our survey speak for themselves with the garages charging the lowest prices for unleaded petrol featured at the top of the list. The price of unleaded has changed dramatically since Tuesday 31st July, when Kelliher's Garage re-opened after a long absence. On Tuesday 16th Oct. three garages: Kellihers (Rathass), Nolans (NCR) and O'Connors (Monavalley) dropped the price of unleaded petrol by 3.6p, making them the cheapest in town at 59.9p/litre. On Wed. 17th six other garages followed suit, leaving three garages (Shell, Upr. Monavalley; Esso, Caherslee; and McElligotts Statoil) sharing the dearest slot, charging a whopping 63.9p/litre!! On Thurs. 18th, the Esso garage in Caherslee became the tenth to join the "best value petrol in town" club by reducing the price to 59.9p. Shell, Upr. Monavalley reduced its price to 60.9p on Friday, leaving McElligotts, Oakpark having the most expensive petrol in town - until Tues. 23rd Oct when the price was reduced to match the rest. ALL of the town's 12 garages had been charging 59.9p/litre until late on Thurs. evening when both Kellihers and Manor Statoil reduced their price by 1p to 58.9p/litre. Joe O'Connor's Maxol (Clash Cross) and Esso, the Horan Centre both followed suit on Friday and on Saturday two more (O'Connor's Monavalley and Nolans, N.C.R) also reduced their prices. Esso, Manor Village changed on Monday and Fairies Cross on Tuesday. On Friday (9th Nov) the Shell garage on the Castlemaine Road reduced both its petrol and diesel price to match Kellihers. McElligotts, Oakpark was the last garage to reduce its price (on Fri 16th Nov) from the max. of 60.9p to 59.9p, making it one of the three dearest in town.
On Tue 20th Nov, Kellihers reduced the price of petrol and diesel by 1p to 57.9p and 51.9p respectively, making it the cheapest in town .... for one day. Today (Wed 21st) the three other garages closest to Kellihers reduced their prices to equal the cheapest - Esso, The Horan Centre; Joe O'Connor, Clash Cross; and Manor Statoil.
There is now a price difference of 2p between the cheapest and dearest for unleaded and a 3p difference in the price of diesel. Remember - the AA is advising motorists to shop around for fuel, forget past loyalties and buy by the litre not by the cash amount! Before your next fill-up, check here for the best price in town.
