Moreton
Sydney Denny was born 22nd May 1913 in Harleston. He was the second son of
Sydney and May. Moreton was educated at Bungay Grammar School.
On leaving school he started his selling career as a door to
door salesman for Electrolux in Lowestoft. He was in digs in Kirkley with
Mr & Mrs Murrills. He eventually married their only daughter Joy in
1940.
Moreton pursued a selling career in various hardware stores in London. He
joined the RNVR and was called up at the start of World War II. He served
in the Royal Navy and was decorated with the DSC. He was on the Atlantic
Convoys, the famous PQ17 convoy to Russia. He was wounded and lost the
hearing in his left ear. After this he was shore based and assisted on the
Mulberry Harbour crossing for D Day. At the end of World War II he was
based in Southampton.
Moreton returned to the family business G Denny & Sons after the war to
work with his father Sydney and uncle Hedley. He eventually became the
sole owner and retired in 1978.
Moreton
and Joy lived on the Needham Road in Harleston where they built
"Charnwood". This was almost opposite the house he grew up in -
Haroldstone.. When he retired they moved to the centre of Harleston to
"Perosies" next door but one to the church of St John the Baptist.
Moreton
died on 8 August 1988The Denny Window in St John's in memory of Moreton
commerates the Denny family in the Harleston area.
Moreton is buried in St Mary's, Redenhall. Joy died in 1995 and is
buried with him.
