Charles 1803

Charles Thomas Denny was born 29 January 1803, and baptised 29 May the same year in Syleham.  He married Mary Davy in Fressingfield in 1828.

Four of his children (Lavinia, Charlotte, George, and James Davy) were born in Fressingfield from 1828 to 1834. Charles, John, Euphemia Caroline, Walter and Arthur were born in Newington, Surrey between 1837 and 1848.

Charles died of TB in 1849 shortly after the birth of his youngest child. At the time of his death he was a brewer and residing at 7 County Street, Newington. Living there in 1851 were his widow and five of their children. Mary’s occupation is given as mangler. Also living in 7 County Street in 1851 were his brother George (also married to a Davy) his wife Rebecca and their three children, together with Rebecca/Mary’s mother. Mary lived in 35 Chatham Street in 1871 47 Henshaw Street, Newington in 1881 with George her son who was unmarried.

A brief resume of Charles’ children:

Lavinia (1828) married William Henry Williams in 1849 in Newington (he was also from Newington) This information is from Lavinia and William’s marriage certificate. They had one child Charlotte aged 1 at the time of the 1851 census

Charlotte (1830) married George Rushworth in Kennington, Lambeth in 1853. Both Charlotte and George were still alive at the time of the 1881 Census living in 45 Courland Grove, Clapham. George was a stone mason born in the Strand.
They had 9 children from 1854 to 1875 all born in Clapham or Brixton. The only information we have about the next generation (Rushworths) is that the eldest daughter married somebody Taplin and they had two children—Eleanor and Ethel A.

George (1832) George was a Wheelwright, unmarried, and living with his widowed mother in 47 Henshaw Street, Newington in 1881. In 1891 he was in Newington Workhouse.

James Davy Denny (1834) was born in Fressingfield and married Emma Beatrice Howe from Walworth in Surrey. He was an Architect/Surveyor and had moved to Church Gresley, Derby by the time of the 1881 census. We don’t know if they had any children.

Charles Thomas (1837) was the first of the children to be born in London. He married Mary Ann Underwood in St Johns Waterloo Second Port Surrey in 1858. They had four children (Charlotte, Frederick William, James Walter and Mary Ann born between 1858 and 1865 (approximate dates) Nothing is known of the next generation. Charles was a printer then warehouseman and then silk designer. He was living in Hackey in 1881  He died in 1889 of Epilepsy.

Euphemia Caroline (1841)  She was staying with Ephraim and Mary Ann Denny, along with their little George on the 1851 census.

John William (1838) married Emily Goodhall in St Mary’s Church, Newington on 10 November 1861. They had 7 children.

Walter (1844) married Martha Atkins in Newington in 1871. She was from Birmingham. They seem to have had six children (Mary who married Charles Carr, Albert who married Gertrude, Martha who married Albert Tipping and they had 5 children), Charles Davy who married Mary Ann Swanton, and Phoebe Denny who married Thomas William Lennox.
