George Denny Spratt of Fressingfield | ||
George Denny Spratt was born on 14 September 1795 in Wacton, Norfolk, the son of Stephen and Mary Ann Spratt (nee Pratt). He was baptised in Wortwell Independent Church near Harleston, Norfolk on 26 March 1799. He died 10 August 1855 in Fresssingfield, Suffolk. Mary died 16 September 1840 also in Fressingfield. In the 1830s Mr Spratt owned land with George Denny in Fressingfield. Mr Spratt is known to have built a "coffin" church in Friston, Suffolk before building a church in the same style in Fresssingfield in 1835. For twenty years he "gratuitously preached the Gospel of Christ as the power of God under Salvation". Mr Spratt did not believe in keeping minutes and so there are not records until 1857. However the opening service was attend by 900 people. It was not until March 1839 that the Church was formed although Mr Spratt had spoken the Word of Life for upwards of nearly four years.George had four children. Mary Ann born 1836, George A born 1837, Stephen born in about 1839 and Hannah Hollick born 7 September 1840. Mary Spratt died just 9 days after her birth. We know that Stephen was not married in 1881 and was living in Great Ashfield, he died 10 January 1886 and was buried in Fresssingfield Baptist Church. Hannah married Henry Buxton Crisp on 19 September 1865 in Walsham-le-Willows. He was the son of the Rev G Crisp of Lowestoft. In the 1881 census Henry is a printer and bookseller in Saxmundham, Suffolk. In 1851 he is a Printers Apprentice in Mitford, at the home of Henry C Wigg. From this occupation it is conceivable that he was the son of Annie Crisp who in 1881 was widowed and living with her daughter and grandson in Lowestoft. She gave her occupation as bookseller and stationer. She was born in 1802 in Dennington. Hannah had at least two children, Fanny born in Saxmundham in 1873 and Henry G born 1877. On the 1891 Census Fanny gives her occupation as Stationer's Assistant. Henry G Crisp gives his occupation as Printer's Apprentice. I note that there is a bookshop and stationers in Saxmundham in 2003 called H G Crisp, founded 1834. I would be interested to hear the link. If you have discovered this site because you are researching your family tree, I would be delighted to hear from you. I am descended from the George Denny who was living with the Rev. George Denny Spratt in the 1830s in Fressingfield. I would like to speculate that the Rev's mother was my George Denny's sister. |
