Edward James Denny was born December 9, 1852 in Mendham. 

In 1871 Edward was an apprentice whitesmith living in London Road, Harleston He became a gas fitter in London.

He married Sophia Amelia Ely on November 4 1876 in St James Church Bermondsey. She was born in 1854 in Dereham.

At the time of the 1881 census they were living at 66 Lynton Road, Bermondsey, Surrey. He was a gasfitter. His name seems to have changed from Edward James to Edward Thomas Denny by the time he married! The written places of where they lived were obviously distorted by their Norfolk accents - Harlson and Durham, Norfolk.

Edward and Sophia had six children:
