14. EDWARD3 DENNY (RHODA2 COSSEY, WILLIAM1) was born March 6, 1820 in Mendham, and died March 14, 1906 in Harleston (Source: tomb stone.). He married ANN COLBY December 8, 1843 in Wortwell Meeting House, daughter of WILLIAM COLBY and HANNAH MEEK. She was born May 31, 1823 in Harleston, and died February 16, 1893 in Harleston.

Notes for EDWARD DENNY:

Edward was the youngest but one of the eight children of George and Rhoda. Family legend has it that he was the "runt of the litter" and not suited for a labouring job. He was therefore apprenticed to a tailor in Harleston and followed this trade for the rest of his life. He had a small tailor's shop on the corner of Chapel Yard which is now part of G Denny & Sons. This leged of fraility may be supported by the fact that he was virtually the only one of the eight children who did not move to London in the 1840s. However he grew to be a robus 6' 6". He was also something of a ne'er do well to the point that his brother in law, James Colby, who a number of ironmongers shops throughout Norfolk, gave the Harleston branch to his sister Ann in order to ensure her livelihood. He outlived his own son.

Notes for ANN COLBY:

CC

Ann ran the Brown & Colby business in Harleston because her husband Edward was a "lazy so and so". Her nephew William Denny came to work as an assistant, from Burnham Market via Thetford, in 1870. Later her son George also helped. The firm then became known as W & G Denny and Sons but in 1895 the business became "rundown" - trade directories in 1896 advertise the firm in small print and William Denny left and went back to Thetford to work for his uncle.

Notes for MARY ANN COSSEY:

She went to work for Henry Reynolds as a housekeeper, and to look after his baby daughter, Ellen - he having been recently widowed. His brother John Reynolds was a vet in Eye, and was a Baptist. The 2 brothers, Henry and John, married 2 sisters from Eye and I suspect that when Henry's first wife died a new housekeeper was found for him via the Baptist connection. The story goes that the newly widowed Henry was so bad tempered that Mary Ann refused to stay, and was just walking out of the house when Aunty Nellie cried our from her cot. Mary Ann couldn't leave the child, so came back and eventually married Henry (who, according to my grandfather, wasn't bad tempered at all but was renowned for his good humour).

31. WILLIAM4 DENNY (WILLIAM3, RHODA2 COSSEY, WILLIAM1) was born December 27, 1851 in Shoreditch, and died November 5, 1913. He married MARY JANE CATTON 1887, daughter of ? CATTON and MARIA. She was born January 8, 1857 in Kenninghall, and died 1896 in Thetford?.

Notes for WILLIAM DENNY:

"adopted" by Joseph and Elizabeth Colby of Burnham Market

CC

Willie was orphaned when his father William Denny (1812-1852), London, died before his birth was registered and when hIs mother also died six months later. He was taken to Burnham Market to be 'adopted' by his Uncle and Aunt, Joseph and Elizabeth Colby. He must have had a good upbringing and was fond of his foster parents. Mary has a momenta of his, with the note 'A piece of Mrs Joseph Colby's ...wedding dress, who brought me up'. An early photograph (1858) of him is unusual for that time. His education would have included music - he was to play the organ and became the choirmaster for the Thetford Congregational Church.

Listed on 1861 census as staying with his Uncle Joseph at Back Street, Burnham Market. At the age of 17 he went to Thetford, worked with his uncle for 18 months before going to the family business at Harleston. His aunt Ann Denny (nee Colby) was running this shop and later he was taken into partnership with his cousin George, the firm taking the name W and G Denny and sons.

Following Ann's death the business became run down. The firm was unable to support two partners and, as Willie had less claim on the shop than his cousin, he went to work for his Uncle James and his cousin Robert Tilley in Thetford early in July 1895. This move was a prelude to misfortune for him. Within a year his wife Mary Jane had died of breast cancer and he was left with three young children to bring up (a fourth child had died at birth).

In his will, James Colby left his nephew a fine house with an orchard, Orchard House in Bury Road, where the family had been living. They could have lived there rent free but unfortunately Willie was given some bad advice, sold this house to invest in new property being built by his in-laws in Ipswich. The expected profits from this investment did not materialise and the subsequent worry probably brought on a stroke from which he never fully recovered.

Willie was a small man, just over five feet tall and weighing only eight stones. He was a popular and respected member of his family and church.

Check facts as his mother would have been 42 when he was born and a 18 year gap between him and his older sister.

According to a letter from Herbert Denny, dated 26 May 1974, Willie was the Hon Sec of the harleston Mutual Improvement Society.

CC

Born in Harleston and brought up in Thetford, he started work as a clerk in London, though it had been his ambition to be an engineer. In 1914 he joined the London Electrical Engineers stationed at Tilbury and later tranfered to the Royal Flying Corps. After the war he was able to fufil that ambition and at the age of 24(t) he took an apprenticeship with the GE . On completing this he worked for them as one of their electrical engineers. Among other projects, he supervised the erection of the Kuala Lumpur power station.

Herbert called into G Denny & Sons in the 1960s. Met Moreton, Roger, etc.

37. GEORGE4 DENNY (EDWARD3, RHODA2 COSSEY, WILLIAM1) was born April 8, 1860 in Mendham (Source: Birth Cert.), and died June 30, 1903 in Harleston. He married MARY ELIZABETH EVERSON December 25, 1883 in Bedingfield (Source: Bedingfield Fiche.), daughter of EDWARD EVERSON and MARY FULCHER. She was born July 16, 1861 in Occold (Source: Birthday Book.), and died November 8, 1943 in Beccles.

Notes for GEORGE DENNY:

When his mother Ann inherited the business from her brother James Colby, George was too young to run the business so his older cousin Willie who was a orphan qv and had been brought up by his uncle James Colby and aunt was asked to come and run the business. For some years the business traded as W & G Denny t/a Messrs James Colby & Co. Later reverting to W & G Denny, then G Denny & Sons and finally G Denny & Sons Ltd.

The relationship between William and George was not always a happy one as family legend has it that George was an alcoholic. The famous story is that George used to go out on his horse debt collecting around the various farms on a Friday afternoon but would drink the proceeds on his way home. After much criticism from his family he finally concocted a cover story for the final lack of funds whereby he was attacked while riding over Stuston Common, beaten up and robbed. In actual fact he had coshed himself with the "life preserver" that he always carried to provide evidence of his concocted story. The "life preserver" is now in the posession of Roger.

William eventually returned to Thetford and George ran the business till his early death brought on by alcoholism in 1903. His wife "Nana" then ran the business.

Notes for MARY ELIZABETH EVERSON:

It is reputed that Mary's father was a publican in Bedingfield (?). Mary ran the business after her husband's early death till her sons, Sydney and Hedley were old enough to take it over. She was a chronic invalid who suffered from elephantitis. Mary lived with her son Sydney at The Old House and had to be carried up and downstairs, night and morning. Nana lived long enough to see Roger, the first of her great grandchildren.

Notes for HEDLEY GEORGE DENNY:

Letter from Christopher Hall, Head Master, Commercial School, Redenhall dated 20 January 1898

(Hedley was almost 14)

Dear Mr Denny,

Herewith I enclose Receipt with many thanks.

I am sorry to find you think of taking Hedley into business so soon. Intellectually he is more fitted to leave school than many boys of 15 or 16 but I was hoping you would keep him at least till the end of Prize Term which I feel certain he will do well. This term also is very short ending at Easter and next term is long to make it up.

Hedley played in the band at Pulham Market Airfield during the First World War. He married Maude who was 18 years his senior. He worked with his brother Sydney in G Denny & Sons. He used to go away on buying trips. As he was so much younger than his wife he expected her to die first. Sydney Denny sent the will up to Maude after Hedley died, by the errand boy. Hedley had left money to a lady in Birmingham. Nothing was every said.

Hedley enjoyed fishing and when Maude was in her 80s they would go fishing on the end of the pier in Southwold. Maude would never say her age and every census time they would go miles away to stay so that she would not have to divulge her age.

Hedley died of cancer of the bladder, as did his brother. They were both heavy smokers and G Denny & Sons had a tobacco licence so that they could get cigarettes.

They had no children.

Obituary from local paper

"Harleston Loses a Well-known Figure"

Fireman, Councillor, Musician, Hunter.

By the death of Mr Hedley George Denny, of London Road, Harleston which occurred at a Norwich Nursing Home yesterday, Harleston loses a well-known personality and one of its leading tradesmen.

In partnership with his brother, he had carried on the old-established ironmongery business the the Thoroughfare, of Messrs. G. Denny and Sons, which had been in the hands of members of his family at the same premises since 1827.

Mr Denny, whose wife survives him, was 68. He had been a member of Harleston Fire Brigade for over 30 years, and acted as Brigade captain for a long period. He had watched the growth of the Brigade from the days of the old horse-drawn manual engines, when the Parish Council had control. Mr Denny was a member of the Parish Council fore more than 20 years, an enthusiastic angler and had been a keen follower of the Eastern Counties Otter Hounds. He had been bandmaster of the old Harleston Town Band, and one of the original members of the Harleston Town Orchestra.

Noted Brentwood Singer Dies

Many old friends in an around Brentwood will regret to learn of the death of Mr William Moore Sheldrake which occurred on Wednesday afternoon at his home, The Hollies, Frederick's Road, Beccles, Suffolk. He was 86. Although he had been in failing health for about two years, Mr Sheldrake had only been confined to his room the past six weeks.

Mr Sheldrake moved to Beccles in 1939 from Brentwood, where he lived for 32 years. He had retired in 1938 from the position of accountant with the Mercantile Bank of India in Gracechurch Street, Lond, where he had served throughout his career.

Freemasonry and music were great interests of Mr Sheldrake. He had long been a prominent figure in London Freemasonry and was a Past Assistant Grand Director of Ceremonies. In addition to his Beccles membership, he belonged to two London Lodges, that at Sydenham and the East and West. Mr Sheldrake was also a member of the Rose Croiz Chapter, the Mark Master Masons, and the Royal Ark Masons of which he was a Past Grand Deacon.

Very fond of music, MrSheldrake used to be a fine alto singer. During much of his time at Brentwood he sang in the Parish Church choir and afterwards in the Brentwood School choir. He had also sung in several of the City churches, particularly St Albans's, Holborn. At one time he lived at Forest Hill, London, and was then well known as a singer at St George's Church Sydenham, where his friend was choirmaster.

Mr Sheldrake used to be an enthusiastic fisherman.

Mrs Sheldrake, who survives hi, recently retired from office as secretary of the Beccles Women's Conservative Association. In addition there are three sons and two daughters by the first marriage.

After cremation at Horsham St Faith, Norwich, yesterday, the ashes will be interred today at South Weald Church which Mr Sheldrake formerly served as a sidesman.

She was born in Halifax (Source: Julie.), and died 1895 (Source: Julie.). He married (2) SARAH TILLYER GREGORY March 17, 1897 (Source: Julie.). She died 1908.

Notes for FRANCIS EDWARD COSSEY:

Known as Edward

Edward left the family farm and went to work for his uncle, Charles Wilson in London. He decided to train for the Baptist Ministry and either went to the Manchester Baptist College or to a Baptist College in London (I have conflicting accounts). His first ministry was at the Bethel Chapel, Shipley, Yorkshire, and later moved to Park Road Baptist Chapel, Bingley. His first wife was about 8 years older than him, and came from a fairly well to do Halifax family (again, they were Baptists). At some time in the 1880s he came back to Suffolk, as Minister of the Baptist Chapel at Eye and the family lived at the Red House, Horham (which is actually in the lane leading down to the Horham Baptist Chapel where his father and grandfather were buried). After Elizabeth died, he married Sarah Tillyer Gregory, whom he had known since his days in London in the 1860s. She was known as "Little Grandma" by his grandchildren, and they were very fond of her.

His last Ministry was at the Baptist Chapel at Yiewsley, which is in West London.

September 26 1909 at Eye Parish Church St Peter & Paul

Cutting from paper

Wedding - A marriage in which considerable interest was centred, was solemnized in the Parish Church on Sunday, the contracting parties being Mr Sidney Wm. Denny, of Harleston and Miss May Cutting, of this town. An unusually large congregation was present to witness the ceremony. The bride presented a pleasing appearance as she walked up the aisle leaning on the arm of her brother, Mr W Cutting, who subsequently gave her away. She wore a dress of crepe-de-chine trimmed with pearl lace and Japanese embroidery, and carried a lovely boquet, the gift of the bridegroom; her only bridesmaid was her sister, Miss Alice Cutting, while Mr Hedley Denny officiated as best man. After the ceremony, which was performed by the Vicar, Rev J F S Pritchitt, a reception, which was largely attended, was held at the bride's residence, and later in the day the happy pair left for Lowestoft, where the honeymoon is being spent. The bride's travelling costume was of navy serge, and crinoline hat trimmed with feathers. The presents numbered over 80, many of which were very valuable. The carriages and greys were supplied from the Cherry Tree Hotel.
