National Car Testing begins on Jan 4th 2000
The test in the first year will examine all Private cars registered in the State on or before 1st Jan 1992. More than 800,000 cars will be liable to testing in the first year.The test will be carried out every two years thereafter.
The Test will comprise of 57 different inspection and will be carried at dedicated Testing Centres by National Car Testing Services Ltd.under license from the Dept. of the Environment.The cost of the test will be £35 and where retesting is necessary a re-test fee of £19 will apply. Retests that do not need the use of the testing lanes will be carried out free of charge. i.e. The replacement of bulbs , wipers etc .
Owners will be invited to have their cars tested about the anniversary of first registration in the State.The registered owner will receive notification in the post.
The Test is primarily aimed at Safety and Emission standards. Brakes, steering , lights , wipers ,seat belts, tyres,glass and exhaust emissions will all be subject to a thorough inspection and the standards applied will be stringent.
