Installing Remote Access Service (RAS)
Before RAS can be configured, you must first make sure that you have installed NT's TCP/IP protocol and the actual RAS software, neither of which are installed by default.
Double
click on Control Panel | Network
Double-click
on the Add Software; highlight Remote Access Service in the
Network Software box and click on Continue.
Installing Modem for use with RAS
If
your modem is not already listed, click on Add to have Windows NT
detect it for you. You will, however, need to know on what COM port your
modem is installed and select this when prompted for the Port:.
Windows NT may then show you a list of suggested modems - simply select
your modem and click on OK in the Configure Port window.
Installing TCP/IP
To install TCP/IP, click on Add Software and highlight TCP/IP Protocol and related components and click on Continue. When the Windows NT TCP/IP Installation Options window appears, click on Continue. When a window appears asking Do you want to configure RAS to support the TCP/IP protocol?, click on OK.
Once your modem is installed, highlight it in the Remote Access Setup window and click on Continue.
When a TCP/IP Configuration window appears, click on DNS.
Click
on OK from the Network Settings window to complete the installation
of the Remote Access Service. When Windows NT prompts you to exit
and restart Windows NT, click on Restart Now to reboot your
machine.
Editing the Windows NT login script SWITCH.INF
Double-click on the Notepad icon from within the Accessories group from the Program Manager to launch the Notepad. To open up switch.inf, go under the File menu to Open and type c:\winnt35\system32\ras\switch.inf in the File name: box.
Add the following lines to the end of the file:
[Indigo]
COMMAND=<cr> OK=<match>"sername:" LOOP=<ignore> COMMAND=username<cr> OK=<match>"assword:" LOOP=<ignore> COMMAND=password<cr> OK=<match>"lip-server>" LOOP=<ignore> COMMAND=ppp<cr> OK=<ignore>Where username and password are your username and password in lowercase letters.
