Invalid Page Fault errors in Netscape Mail

This can be caused by corrupt inbox. To resolve this problem, follow these steps:

Close Netscape Navigator (Communicator) . Using Windows 95/98 Explorer or Windows 3.1 File Manager, locate file named INBOX and INBOX.SNM. Rename both files to INBOX.TXT and INBOX.OLD. Open file INBOX.TXT in any text editor, all your messages will be there.

Corruption is sometimes caused by invalid date on one of the messages. While you are looking at the INBOX.TXT file, look at the dates of the messages. If you see a date that clearly makes no sense - several years old or a future date, change it to a current date, and then save the  file as  OLDBOX. Restart Netscape Navigator. Your inbox will be automatically rebuilt.

You will also see a new mail folder called OLDBOX. See if you can open it. If no, you can still read  your old mail messages by opening the file OUTBOX in any text editor, but make sure to move the file OUTBOX away from your mail directory.

Note: If you are getting similar errors when attempting to send mail, perform the operation above on files OUTBOX and OUTBOX.SNM.

Invalid Page Fault in Kernel32.DLL

Invalid page faults are generally caused by a lack of system resources, out of date video drivers, or a corrupt swap/paging file. To resolve the problem, try the following: Use the default settings for the swap file.

Follow these steps to use the default settings:

Click the Start button and select Settings, Control Panel.
Double-click the System icon.
Click the Performance tab and click the Virtual Memory button.
Click "Let Windows manage my virtual memory settings (recommended)".
Click OK until you return to Control Panel.
Make sure that you hard drive is error free by running your ScanDisk and Defragmenter utilities from the System Tools menu as follows:
Click the Start button and choose Programs, Accessories, System Tools, ScanDisk.
When complete, click the Start button and choose Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter.
If you are getting many invalid page faults in kernel32 and are NOT running OSR2 (call the people you bought your computer from if you don't know what OSR2 is or if you aren't sure) then you may benefit from the "Kernel32" Update.
To install the update:
Create a folder (directory) called temporary on your hard disk.
Download the update from Microsoft's web site to your new temporary folder.
Since the page may change, Netscape cannot include a direct link from this article, so go to the main Microsoft page at http://www.microsoft.com, click Search, and type "Windows 95 Kernel 32 Update".
Be sure to install the latest Service Pack for Windows 95.
Go to the folder you just downloaded the kernel update into and double- click the file to install it. If the install process tells you that your Kernel32.dll is newer than the one you are installing, do NOT overwrite the one on your system.
If you have questions about this procedure, please check Microsoft's help information.
It is also essential that the latest service pack be installed before any kernel upgrades. On some versions of Windows 95 you can check which service pack you have by clicking the Start button, choosing Run, typing qfecheck.exe, and clicking OK. The resulting screen will tell you which
updates to search for on Microsoft's site.

GPFs in Navigator 2.02

Before re-installing, try this:

Shut down Netscape.

Using Windows Explorer (File Manager in 3.1) , go into your Navigator directory (By default it is usually C:\Program Files\Netscape\Navigator) and rename the Mail folder to Oldmail, the address.htm to address.old, and the bookmark.htm to bookmark.old. Remove both the Cache folder and the netscape.hst file. When you restart Netscape, a new Mail folder, address book, bookmark file, Cache folder, and History file will be automatically created for you. Check to make sure that the new items are working (open up Messenger, your bookmarks and Address Book) and that Netscape is no longer crashing. To import your Mail, bookmarks, and addresses:

Shut down Netscape, go to the Oldmail folder, and copy any of the mail folders you wish to keep (i.e.. Inbox) into your new Mail folder. Go to the Bookmarks menu, in the Bookmark window go to the File menu, choose Import, and select the bookmark.old to import them into your current bookmark file.

Go to the Address Book menu, in the Address Book window go to the File menu, choose Import, and select the address.old to import them into your current bookmark file.

Manually remove the Cache and history files on Navigator to make sure that they're not the cause of the problem. To do so, shut down Netscape. Then, using File Manager, Windows Explorer, or a DOS prompt, locate the netscape.hst file (it should be under your \Netscape directory) and delete it. Then locate the Cache folder (it should be one level below) and delete all the files from that directory.
