Error Message: Explorer Caused an Invalid Page Fault in Kernel32.dll
Err Msg: Rundll32 Has Performed an Illegal Operation...
Error 602: The port is already open.
This often happens when another program is using the modem. Disable all fax software.
If this does not work then shutdown and turn off the computer. This forces the port to close.
If it still gives this error try reinstalling the modem. (Be careful with WinModems as they have often a lot of extra disks)
If not, contact the manufacturer and get them to sort it out.
Error 631: The port was disconnected by the user.
The user disconnected themselves. There is no fix, just connect again.
Error 720: No PPP control protocols configured
Some NT4 users can get this error when they dial up:
The usual solution is to install the NetBIOS Interface Service.
Go to Network/Services/ and add NetBIOS Interface.
Reinstall the service pack if the pc copied files from the WinNT cd to keep all files up to date.
Error 738: The server would not assign an address
Solution 1
- Go to DUN
- Switch off error control and modem compression (in modem properties)
- Disable software compression and PPP LCP extensions (on the server tab)
Solution 2
- Go to Network Control Panel
- Select Protocols Tab
- Select TCP/IP & click on Properties
- Go to WINS address tab & click "Enable Windows Resolution"
- Go to the IP address tab & make sure that "Obtain an IP address from the DHCP server" is selected.
- Untick "Enable PPP_LCP extensions"
Error 745: An essential file is missing. Re-install Dial-Up Networking
This happens when DUN has been customised and is looking for a .dll file that is missing. The WOW Compuserve pack is one such culprit. All we have to do is edit the registry and change it back to look for the standard DUN .dll Rasapi32.dll
- Close DUN and make sure Rnaapp is not running
- Open the registry edit and browse to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, System, CurrentControlSet, Services, RemoteAccess, Authentication, SMM_Files, PPP
the value name Path should be set to Rasapi32.dll (SMMCCTB.DLL or SMMSCRPT.DLL are usually the culprits).- Make sure Rasapi32.dll is present in \windows\system. If not reinstall DUN.
DUN Could Not Negotiate a Compatible Set of Network Protocols
This can occur for many reasons, first thing to check is that all network components are configured correctly.
For example; in Network in control panel only TCP/IP and Dial up Adaptor are bound. Client can be also, for making use of the save password option.
Sometimes it can be software corruption, so, remove and re-install DUN TCP/IP etc.
Then try creating a new connection etc.
Other times a dodgy modem can cause it, try connecting in hyperterminal to determine the quality of the line and connection etc.
The Computer You are Dialing is not Answering
In this instance there are some general things to check, eg: phone number and lenght of cable etc.
To make sure the modem is actualy dialing, have it dial the batphone. If it fails to ring the problem is most likely a cable problem.
Also check the network settings in control panel.
Then have a look at the modem preferences, maybe add ATX1, or AT&FX1, AT&F2
If all these fail then test the modem in Hyperterminal and if it connects create a new connection, also if needed re-install dua and tcp/ip etc.
Illegal Operations / Dial Up Networking folder will not open / Cannot get DUN properties / "Registry entry is corrupt: Reinstall dial up networking"
The wrong version of windows 95 cd was used to install DUN. Symptoms include:
- Illegal operations in Rundll32, Kernel32 or anything with Rna*.dll (eg Rnaui.dll) when you use dial up networking
- Unable to view the properties of a connection
- Unable to open the DUN folder
- Messages saying the registry is corrupt - reinstall dun.
Solution:
- Uninstall DUN and all network components.
- Reboot
- Reinstall DUN using correct win95 cd version. If you get any version conflicts make sure you say NO to keep existing files! - this ensures all the 'bad' files are over-written.
DUN connection icon no longer appears in tray
If the DUN connection icon (two green computers) no longer appears in the tray after installing IE4, first check your settings by opening the Dial-Up Networking folder and then choosing Connections | Settings. Check "Show icon on taskbar after connected", the first option. If this doesn't work, then try reinstalling DUN.
"Save Password " option on connect box is greyed out
The save password option on the "connect to" can be unavailable for two reasons.
- Client for Microsoft Windows is not installed/damaged.
- The password file is damaged.
Solution 1:
- Install / reinstall Client for Microsoft Windows. Remember to fill in the Computer Name and Workgroup fields in the Identification field. You can put anything in here but it's best to keep the entries less than 8 characters.
Solution 2:
- Do a search for *.pwl. Pwl stands for PassWord List.
- Delete all those in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. ( Be careful as Claris Works has .pwl files as well - these are located in the claris application directory.)
- Reboot the machine.
- When the "Windows Logon" login box appears enter a username (best to use indigo username) and keep the password field blank.
- Press OK to confirm the blank password. A new username.pwl is created.
Error Message: Explorer Caused an Invalid Page Fault in Kernel32.dll
This behavior may occur if your password list file is damaged.
To resolve this issue, recreate your password list file. To do so, use the following steps:
- Do a search for *.pwl. Pwl stands for PassWord List.
- Delete all those in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. ( Be careful as Claris Works has .pwl files as well - these are located in the claris application directory.)
- Reboot the machine.
- When the "Windows Logon" login box appears enter a username (best to use indigo username) and keep the password field blank.
- Press OK to confirm the blank password. A new username.pwl is created.
NOTE: Microsoft Windows 95 Service Pack 1 (Windows 95 ver. 4.00.950a) , password list files may be damaged even after you rename them and they are recreated automatically. To resolve this issue, obtain the Password File Update Mspwlupd2.exe and run it. You can obtain this update file from the following page on the Microsoft site on the World Wide Web:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/contents/Updates/W95Password/default.asp
