On Leaving a House after Twenty Years

Within this place we spent the days

Of summer time of this our life.

We made a garden and a home,

Invited friends and gathered books,

And built within both heart and mind

A bulwark to the bitter world.

The days came through our doors and went

Their varied ways both dark and light

To reach at last the quiet light

Of evening and a single star.
